Dr. Thach Thi Ngoc Yen, Deputy Head of the Department of Pediatrics - Neonatology, Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, said that from May 2023 to now, the number of children with respiratory and digestive diseases, especially infectious diseases such as dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, coming to the hospital for examination has increased. Many children have high fever, poor appetite, rash on hands and feet, cough, wheezing, etc. Through examination and paraclinical results, many cases were diagnosed with dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, pneumonia, etc. Children are of many ages, from infants to under 16 years old, and have many levels of illness from mild to severe, requiring respiratory support intervention.
Among the sick children, many are obese children with dengue fever, children a few months old with hand, foot and mouth disease or children with severe pneumonia on the background of mental and motor development delay. In particular, many cases of hand, foot and mouth disease are infected with the EV71 strain, a virus that spreads rapidly, causing high fever, leading to many serious complications in the nervous system, cardiovascular system, pulmonary edema, shock, heart failure, and rapid risk of death.
According to doctors, changing weather, hot sun, heavy rain, are favorable conditions for infectious diseases to have the opportunity to "attack" the weak immune system of children. Especially children from 6 months to 3 years old, the "immune gap" stage, are at high risk of getting sick, easily suffering from complications, leading to a situation of disease on top of disease.
Dr. Ngoc Yen said: “In infants and young children, the disease progresses very complicatedly, sometimes atypically. Therefore, when taking care of children, parents should observe and closely monitor unusual changes. Children need to be taken to the hospital when there are signs: Changes in body temperature, continuous high fever, hypothermia; abnormal breathing, rapid breathing, contractions, wheezing, apnea; some symptoms related to the digestive tract such as: vomiting, loose stools, poor feeding, bloating; neurological symptoms: convulsions, staring at the ceiling, abnormal movements; skin symptoms: jaundice in infants, pale skin, purple lips. Absolutely do not buy medicine or treat at home on your own because it can make the disease progress more severely, threatening the child's life.
Doctors also recommend that parents focus on nutrition to improve their children's health: Supplement groups of substances that strengthen the child's immune system. Pay attention to using clean water sources, follow the principles of eating cooked food, drinking boiled water, ensuring food hygiene and safety. Keep the house, personal hygiene, and living environment clean. Instruct children on proper oral hygiene; increase physical activity and sports .
From June 12 to the end of 2023, Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital organizes a program of 1,000 free health check-ups and nutrition consultations for children. Interested parents can follow the Fanpage http://bvphusanct.com.vn/ or call the hospital hotline 1900 8665 for more details.
