Working together to achieve rural environmental standards.

In implementing environmental criteria in the construction of new rural areas, many localities have mobilized the active participation of the people, thereby gradually changing the face of rural areas, improving the quality of life, and helping localities maintain environmental standards.

Maintaining environmental hygiene is no longer solely the responsibility of the government or organizations, but is gradually becoming a voluntary daily habit for many households. Without waiting for general cleaning days, many families in highland villages and hamlets maintain the habit of sweeping, picking up trash, and tending to flowers in front of their houses every day, contributing to keeping the air clean and the landscape beautiful.

Ban Ho commune (Sa Pa town) was once an attractive community tourism destination. However, in recent years, the number of visitors has decreased due to the loss of its pristine and beautiful landscape. Recognizing this, the local government and people have joined forces to implement various solutions to improve the living environment. Village roads are regularly cleaned, flowers and trees are planted along the roadsides, waste is sorted, and residents proactively maintain cleanliness and tidy their homes, ready to welcome visitors back.

Mr. Ly Lao Ta, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ban Ho commune (Sa Pa town), said: The commune has directed the villages to intensify propaganda and mobilize people to carry out general cleaning of the main village roads and public areas. Everyone has a task, from weeding, tending flowers, sweeping village roads to clearing drainage ditches, contributing to maintaining a "bright - green - clean - beautiful" rural landscape.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ky's family, who run a homestay business in La Ve village (Ban Ho), shared: "To attract tourists back to Ban Ho, not only my family but all households are conscious of improving and protecting the living environment, maintaining cleanliness in our homes, village roads and alleys, and building a clean and beautiful landscape."

In Cam Con commune (Bao Yen district), the movement to maintain environmental hygiene is spreading strongly, especially since the locality was recognized as achieving the new rural standard in May 2025. Cam Con commune has established Zalo groups to share images of environmental hygiene competitions among villages, creating a strong ripple effect. Thanks to this innovative approach, many villages maintain regular environmental hygiene without needing reminders.

The 20th of every month is observed as "Village Cleanup Day" in Hong Cam village (Cam Con commune). On this day, all households dedicate 10 minutes to cleaning their homes and public areas. Mr. Pham Van Phuong, Head of Hong Cam village, shared: "When the whole village participates, the change is clearly visible. Now, no one throws garbage indiscriminately anymore; families proactively sort and dispose of household waste, preventing environmental impact."

For two consecutive years, Hong Cam has won first prize in the "New Rural Village - Bright, Green, Clean, and Beautiful" competition organized by Bao Yen district. The village has also mobilized hundreds of millions of VND from social contributions to renovate the cultural center and plant flowers along the roadsides. Currently, 100% of households in Hong Cam have fences and trees to block dust, and waste is sorted and processed at home.

Throughout the province, many practical models for environmental protection are being replicated, such as flower-lined roads, "farmer-managed" roads, mini garbage collection stations, and household waste collection points. During the 2021-2025 period, the province mobilized people to plant over 320 km of flower-lined roads, renovate and maintain over 320 km of rural lighting systems, clean over 1,100 km of village roads and alleys; clear 168 km of drainage ditches, and collect over 100 tons of waste.

Currently, the percentage of households using hygienic water reaches 95%; over 80% of household waste and pesticide packaging is processed according to regulations; and 95% of agricultural, forestry, and fisheries production facilities meet food safety standards. The province has 50 communes that meet environmental and food safety standards; 16 communes that meet advanced environmental standards; and 21 communes that meet advanced standards for living environment quality.

However, according to the authorities, environmental criteria remain one of the most difficult to maintain without the consensus and voluntary participation of the people.

To continue maintaining and improving environmental standards, localities will continue to integrate investment resources from national target programs, provincial and local budgets to build essential infrastructure projects. At the same time, all levels, sectors, and organizations need to strengthen propaganda and mobilization efforts so that maintaining environmental hygiene becomes a daily awareness and habit for every citizen. When each household and each village does well, starting with the smallest things, the living environment will truly become "bright, green, clean, beautiful, and safe."
