Observations show that some waste transfer points still remain on certain roads such as Nguyen Van Linh and Le Phuoc Tho. According to representatives from relevant authorities, the relocation of these waste transfer points within the city is being urgently implemented, with the goal of completion as soon as possible, although the process will inevitably face difficulties.
The city is not only addressing waste transfer points but is also cracking down on illegal dumping of garbage and scrap materials in residential areas, a long-standing problem. For example, in the An Binh resettlement area (An Binh ward), the sight of household waste dumped indiscriminately, with leachate flowing onto the streets, is common in vacant lots. In many places, garbage is piled high, including non-biodegradable and hazardous waste such as plastic bottles, glass, tires, and plastic bags. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, a resident of An Binh ward, expressed his frustration: “There’s a nice kite-flying spot in this area recently, and many people come here to play, so the piles of garbage are affecting the public space. Sometimes the garbage even spills onto the street.”
In response to this situation, the People's Procuracy of Region 1, Can Tho City, recently intervened, conducting an inspection and verification, and issued a recommendation requesting the local authorities to promptly address the issue and protect public interests in accordance with Resolution No. 205/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly . Following this recommendation, the local authorities quickly implemented measures such as increasing garbage collection and cleaning, educating residents to dispose of waste properly, and inspecting and handling violations. The streets that were "named," such as No. 13, No. 10A, and No. 25, have been restored to a clean and beautiful state. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, a resident of An Binh ward, said: "Now, the vacant land in this resettlement area has been cleared and is very spacious, and garbage is collected and processed. Everyone in this area is happy."
Managing urban waste has never been a simple matter, and it certainly cannot be solved "overnight." The efforts of all levels and sectors of the city are clear: listening to feedback, acting promptly, and providing appropriate solutions in the spirit of improving the quality of life for citizens and the urban landscape.
However, the main problem still lies in community awareness. In many residential areas, any vacant plot of land quickly becomes an impromptu dumping ground. Garbage is thrown indiscriminately, in the wrong place, in the wrong way, and at the wrong time. Sorting and processing waste at the source is still not given enough attention. These seemingly minor actions contribute to major consequences for the environment and urban aesthetics.
Building a clean and beautiful city is not the responsibility of any one person alone. It is a shared responsibility of the relevant authorities and also of each individual who lives, works, and benefits from the quality of the environment in their own neighborhood.
Small actions like disposing of waste properly, sorting waste correctly, and adhering to collection schedules, if implemented consistently, will create a big change. With raised awareness and the efforts of the government, a green, clean, and beautiful Can Tho city will become clearly defined.
