Dr. Dinh Tran Ngoc Mai, Specialist in Nutrition and Dietetics, University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, explains: Bananas are known to be a beneficial food for the body and are widely used in daily life. Despite containing many beneficial nutrients, bananas in Vietnam are relatively inexpensive and readily available everywhere.

Bananas are a healthy food and are widely used in daily life.

According to studies, a 100g banana contains approximately 88 calories. However, 90% of those 88 calories are carbohydrates, which are sugars such as glucose, sucrose, and fructose. The sugar content and glycemic index of bananas depend on their ripeness; the riper the banana, the more sugar it contains.

Moreover, bananas contain plant-based essential oils such as antioxidants, and are low in protein and fat – all beneficial for the body.

The banana variety is so named because its fruit is small, round, and plump, resembling a betel nut. Each fruit weighs approximately 80 grams and contains 72 kcal.

Ripe bananas are very nutritious; they are characterized by their long, curved shape and larger size compared to plantain bananas. On average, one banana measuring 20 cm and weighing approximately 120-140 grams contains 120 kcal.

Therefore, depending on daily fruit needs, carbohydrate requirements, medical conditions, and preferences, choose the appropriate type and quantity of bananas. For an average person weighing 55-60 kg, 250-300 grams of fruit per day is sufficient, equivalent to 4-5 small bananas or 3 large ripe bananas.
