The Bank of Korea says more than half of workers in the country are using artificial intelligence in their jobs.
According to Yonhap news agency, the survey showed that the rate of AI application in the workplace in South Korea is nearly double that of the US, with an average time of 5-7 hours per week, compared to 0.5-2 hours in the US.
Men, young workers (18–29 years old) and those with post-graduate degrees are the most likely to use AI. By occupation, doctors and lawyers have the highest rate of AI use (69.2%), followed by managers (65.4%) and office workers (63.1%).
The BOK estimates that generative AI has helped reduce working hours by 3.8% (or 1.5 hours/40-hour workweek) and contributed about 1 percentage point to South Korea's 3.9% GDP growth from the fourth quarter of 2022 to the second quarter of 2025.
The survey also found that 48.6% of respondents believe that AI will have a positive impact on society, while 32.3% are willing to invest in AI funds. The survey was conducted from May 19 to June 17 with 5,512 workers aged 15–64.
South Korea will take AI and energy as spearheads of economic development
South Korea is looking to position itself at the forefront of the global innovation race, with a comprehensive five-year economic strategy based on industries such as AI, biotechnology and clean energy.
According to the announcement on August 13 by the National Planning Commission of Korea, the new plan for the administration of President Lee Jae Myung will last for 5 years, including 3 major governance principles, 5 key policy goals and 123 key national tasks, along with financial support plans and legislative initiatives.
In line with the economic goals of the five major policies, the government plans to build an “AI highway” spanning across industries and regions. This system will rapidly expand access to high-performance computing infrastructure with more than 50,000 advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) and a huge repository of high-quality data.
The initiative aims to attract top talent, develop AI-based industries, expand access to public data, and transform South Korea's public services with AI solutions in areas ranging from disaster response to legal and welfare services. A new national "AI coordination center" will be established to coordinate policies across ministries and agencies.
