Expert review of 10th grade English exam in Hanoi

On the afternoon of June 10, candidates completed the Foreign Language exam for the entrance exam to grade 10 of Hanoi public schools. Evaluating this year's exam, Mr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen - English teacher at HOCMAIEducation System said that the exam remained stable in structure and difficulty compared to the 2022 - 2023 exam with 40 multiple choice questions in 60 minutes.

The knowledge units asked are in the English program for secondary schools, mainly grade 9. The familiar test structure will not put too much pressure on candidates; just need to have a firm grasp of basic phonetics, grammar and vocabulary in the textbook to be able to complete 70% of the test.

Mr. Nguyen said that the questions in the exam include familiar types of questions such as: phonetics, sentence completion, error finding, communication functions, finding synonyms - antonyms, synonym sentences, reading dictionary and reading comprehension to answer questions.

The knowledge content asked focuses on the 9th grade English program, many grammar questions in the curriculum such as: used to, infinitive verbs with "to", conditional sentences, comparative sentences, wishful sentences, etc. In particular, the exam does not test difficult knowledge such as fixed phrases, idioms or advanced vocabulary.

According to teacher Nguyen Trung Nguyen, this year's exam has 75% of the questions at the Recognition - Comprehension level and the remaining 25% of the questions at the Application - High Application level.

Although the test does not contain any tricky questions, some questions are more difficult than the general level of the 9th grade program, such as questions 17, 24, 28, 29, 39 of test code 023.

In general, with this test, in addition to needing to have a solid grasp of basic knowledge of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary in the textbook, candidates also need to have the skills to do the test carefully and meticulously because the questions, although not too difficult, can easily cause confusion.

The common score for this test can be around 6.5-7 points. A score of 9 is possible but to get a score of 10, you need to have good extensive knowledge.
