According to a VNA correspondent in Havana, on May 6, Latin American news agency Prensa Latina reported that military experts around the world reaffirmed on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu battle (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2024) that General Vo Nguyen Giap is one of the 10 most outstanding strategists of all time.
Many international military experts even called General Vo Nguyen Giap “the Red Napoleon,” but Prensa Latina believes that this comparison is not satisfactory and does not match the stature of the “Big Brother” of the Vietnam People’s Army, because Napoleon was a conqueror, while General Vo Nguyen Giap was a liberator. The campaigns against Japan, France, and the United States led by the General had a decisive significance for the independence of the peoples of Indochina.
According to Prensa Latina, the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954 marked General Vo Nguyen Giap's name in the annals of contemporary military history. The French colonial army considered Dien Bien Phu an "impregnable fortress" and a "machine that crushed all attacks of the Viet Minh."
However, instead of a short-term frontal attack with uncertain results, the force led by General Vo Nguyen Giap launched scattered attacks on the “unprecedentedly stronghold group in Indochina” according to the operational motto changing from “fight fast, solve fast to fight sure, advance sure.”
After more than 50 days and nights of brave, intelligent, and creative fighting, our army and people completely destroyed the Dien Bien Phu stronghold.
Prensa Latina emphasized that the Dien Bien Phu victory not only ended the nine-year resistance war against colonialism, but in many aspects was also a solid theoretical and practical foundation for the battles that Vietnam still had to face.
Moreover, the Dien Bien Phu victory demonstrated to the colonies that a poorly armed army, wearing simple sandals, originating from a nation with a nearly primitive agricultural economy, could defeat a superpower with a high-tech war industry.
However, General Vo Nguyen Giap did not take any glory for himself but dedicated all glory to the nation.
The Supreme Commander of the Vietnam People's Army explained: "We had to use small against big, outdated weapons to defeat modern weapons" and affirmed that "the human factor determines victory."
According to Prensa Latina, the simple and dedicated lifestyle of the talented military commander and national hero Vo Nguyen Giap has inspired many Vietnamese soldiers./.
