On the evening of May 9th, Quang Ninh FC hosted Dong Thap FC at home in Round 18 of the Bia Sao Vang National First Division League 2025-2026. Coach Nguyen Van Dan's team entered the match with determination, hoping to climb into the top half of the standings.

That was also the goal of Dong Thap FC, who are ranked just one place behind Quang Ninh, with 18 and 14 points respectively. Dong Thap's determination prevented Quang Ninh from implementing their desired game plan. They were forced to move the ball to the flanks, playing a cross-and-header strategy, placing all their hopes of scoring on their domestic striker Nguyen Van Son.

On a day when Quang Ninh's wingers were out of form, Dong Thap's defense had little difficulty neutralizing them.

In the 79th minute, Mai Quoc Tu took a free kick from outside the penalty area, the ball deflected off the home team's wall and into the net, much to the surprise of goalkeeper Ho Van Tu of the Quang Ninh team.

The crucial goal helped Dong Thap defeat Quang Ninh 1-0 away from home. This result narrowed the gap between the Southern team and their rivals to just one point.

For Quang Ninh, this was their second home defeat since the start of the season. From aiming for promotion, the team from the mining region is now very close to the relegation battle, being 11 points ahead of bottom-placed Thanh Nien Ho Chi Minh City with 4 rounds remaining.
