According to Nam Dinh newspaper , earlier on the morning of May 26, a clip was circulated on social media of a woman jumping into the Dao River, Do Quan Bridge (Nam Dinh City), to save and bring a female student who was drifting in the fast-flowing water to shore.
According to information from Tran Hung Dao Ward Police (Nam Dinh City), at around 6:30 a.m. on May 26, at Do Quan Bridge area, many people discovered a female student being swept away by water into the middle of Dao River.
At that time, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai, a Physical Education teacher at Hong Quang Primary School, was on her way to the city to visit relatives, arrived at Do Quan bridge and witnessed the incident.
Without hesitation, Ms. Mai immediately stopped, left her bike on the bridge, ran down the stairs to the foot of the bridge, then jumped into the river and swam in the direction of the strong current where the female student was being swept away, swam close to the victim and tried to bring her to shore. The teacher's brave action spread strongly on social networks and in the community.
On the same afternoon, Director of Nam Dinh Department of Education and Training Nguyen Xuan Hong signed Decision No. 1206/QD-SGDĐT, commending and organizing the awarding of an extraordinary Certificate of Merit to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai for her brave act of saving people. Chairman of Nam Truc District People's Committee also commended and awarded a Certificate of Merit to Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai.
Mr. Le Viet Thi, Vice Principal of Hong Quang Primary School, where Ms. Mai is working, said: “Ms. Mai is a Physical Education teacher with good professional skills, having won a Gold Medal at the 2024 Ministry of National Defense Sports Competition. In her work, she is always enthusiastic, responsible and dedicated.”
Just think how to save people quickly
Ms. Mai shared that at around 6:30 a.m. on the same day, May 26, she and her mother were on their way home from the hospital to take care of a sick person. When they reached the middle of Do Quan bridge, they saw many people standing on the bridge, so she stopped to ask and was told that someone had just fallen into the water.
At that moment, without thinking much, she told her mother: "I have to jump in to save him."
“At first, I intended to climb over the bridge railing to jump down, but at that time the victim had been swept away quite far, and even if I jumped down, I might not have enough strength to swim out to save him. Seeing the stairs from the top of the bridge down to the nearby dike, I immediately took the stairs down, ran along the dike to the location where the victim had been swept away, then jumped into the river, swam out to pull the victim to shore. At that time, all I could think about was saving the person as quickly as possible,” Ms. Mai recalled.
