Orphan girl with dream of teaching English to disadvantaged children

Tam Duc English Club was established in February 2025, with about 65 members who are orphans, street children, homeless children, and disabled children in Nha Trang City. This is a club established in the implementation of the Khanh Hoa People Speak English Program. Club members are mainly students of the charity class of Ms. Nguyen Thi Duc (residing in Vinh Phuoc Ward, Nha Trang City) opened in Vinh Phuoc Ward. The club meets at the Vinh Phuoc Ward Community Learning Center from 10:00 to 11:30 every Saturday.

One day in late June, we visited and learned about the club's activities. When the class started, Mr. Doan Dac Duc - a volunteer from the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English program, tested and reviewed how to read numbers from 1 to 20 in English for the students. We were impressed by the image of the pretty girl Luu Hong Dieu checking each student's homework. Talking with Ms. Duc, we learned that Dieu is an orphan and is being raised by her. Dieu is the second child in a family of 5 children. When she was alive, Dieu's mother also raised a niece who called her aunt. 4 years ago, Dieu's mother passed away due to a serious illness. Accepting the entrustment, Ms. Duc took in 6 children to raise, educate and prepare their records for them to go to school. In response to that love, the children all affectionately called her "Mother Duc".

The club is taught by Mr. Duc every week. Before the club was established, Mr. Duc also often went to charity classes to teach English to children. Since the club started operating, Dieu and her friends have had more opportunities to learn English better. They learn how to read the alphabet, numbers, everyday objects, songs, and communicate in English. In addition, she sometimes goes to the beach with her mother Duc to talk to foreigners. Thanks to that, she is more confident and bold in communication. “When I learn English, I am very happy and joyful. Thanks to the knowledge I have learned, I understand the lessons, do my homework better than when I study at school, and can confidently communicate with teachers in English. I also help my mother Duc show the way, guide, and introduce foreign guests when participating in activities,” Dieu shared.

During the time the club was active, Dieu not only learned new vocabulary, learned to communicate, and answered questions fluently, but she also helped the teacher check old lessons and guided her friends to copy new words. Dieu confided: "My dream is to study well so that when I grow up, I can be like my mother Duc, teacher Duc, who teaches English to orphans and children in difficult circumstances." Nurturing that dream, every day Dieu tries to study English well, review vocabulary, learn how to communicate, and watch English cartoons to gain more knowledge for herself. At the same time, she supports her friends in the learning process.

Mr. Doan Dac Duc - a volunteer teacher at the club said that during the process of learning English, Dieu learned and absorbed the lessons well. Dieu is a "powerful assistant" who helps him in testing the old lessons for his friends. Thanks to that, the time for testing the learned lessons is shortened, leaving time for the next study and Dieu can also review her knowledge, helping her remember the lessons better. The club has many members who have not been exposed to English, so thanks to Dieu's support and the students who have learned English, they have made more progress. With the foreign language knowledge learned, they will have more luggage to enter life.
