Afraid of getting fat, the girl only eats a few spoonfuls of rice per meal.

Learning about weight loss methods on social networks, the patient reduced his intake of starchy foods, rice, sweets, skipped breakfast, sometimes reducing up to 2/3 of his daily food intake, and performed high-intensity exercises (about 2-3 hours/day). After losing nearly 10 kg, this person continued to diet and exercise as before, making his body gradually thinner. This "harsh" diet was maintained even when he was tired, sluggish, and had lost his period.

Regarding the above case, resident doctor Ngo Tuan Khiem, Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, said that when admitted to the hospital, this patient only weighed 42 kg, had reduced learning and physical activities, poor eating habits, and reduced sleep quality.

The patient was treated, provided psychological support, and received appropriate nutritional rehabilitation to avoid adverse health effects.

Family needs attention

According to the Institute of Mental Health, doctors here regularly receive children with eating disorders. Among them, girls are more numerous.   compared to his younger brother.

Many children with eating disorders have obsessive body dissatisfaction, a strong desire to lose weight; high standards and self-criticism when they do not meet them. There are cases of pressure about body image from the media, social networks, advertisements, comparisons to ideal images; or from weight loss movements.

In addition, doctors also recorded cases of hospitalization due to binge eating disorder, uncontrolled eating. Even when severely obese, they still cannot stop overeating.

"Along with specialized treatment, patients with eating disorders need psychological support to restructure their cognition, helping them have a correct perception of the compatibility between weight and body shape. Families need to care and help their children deal with negative comments, because many children think that being fat means not being cared for, being shunned, and not being accepted by friends," psychologist Nguyen Thu Trang (Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital) shared.
