Overcoming fate

Each person only has one life, so they must live it happily. That is what Hong Nhung (born in 2001, from Binh Phuoc ) realized after a period of struggling to overcome her cruel fate and find joy in life for herself.

Nhung has a beautiful face but life took away her legs when she was 5 years old.

Hong Nhung possesses a gentle, elegant beauty.

Nhung said she was born healthy and normal, but at the age of 5, one afternoon after returning from kindergarten, she lost all feeling in her legs.

Nhung was taken to the hospital by her parents shortly after. After several examinations, the doctor concluded that she had transverse myelitis, completely paralyzed from the navel down, unable to urinate actively. Her legs shrank and atrophied day by day.

“Since I got sick, I had to rely on my mother to help me urinate, and I had to go to the toilet every three hours. Later, I met friends in the same situation and they showed me how to control my urination, so I gradually became independent,” Nhung said.

Throughout her primary and secondary school years, Nhung was taken to school by her mother and carried to class. During the entire class, she just sat still, not daring to drink water no matter how thirsty she was for fear of not being able to control her bowel movements.

But no matter how hard she tried, Nhung still couldn't fit in with everyone. She was like an "invisible person" in the classroom. She never even dared to let her friends see her in a wheelchair.

When she was in high school, her house was 15km away from school. Fearing that her mother would have a hard time taking her to and from school, Nhung decided to drop out of school. That was also when she began a series of negative days.

“Since I dropped out of school, I have always felt useless and worthless. I wanted to see my friends go to school but I didn’t have the courage. I lived in a small room every day, narrowing my life,” Nhung shared.

Nhung has been paralyzed since she was 5 years old.

That negative period lasted for a year. Later, when she saw a friend going to learn makeup, Nhung followed her. That was the turning point that helped her change her life.

With 10 million VND saved from selling online, Nhung went to a wedding dress shop to learn makeup. Every day, her friend took her on a motorbike 15km to learn the profession, and in the afternoon, her friend took her to a coffee shop and sightsee.

Exposed to the vast and colorful world , Nhung finds life more beautiful and herself more valuable.

Once she had the skills and experience, Nhung started taking on makeup clients. Later, she learned more about tattooing and nail care. She rented a room 30km from home. In 2023, Nhung decided to open her own salon, working and taking on students at the same time.

“Now, I can’t even walk, but I can do other things that other people can do. Moreover, I am loved and helped by everyone, so life is much easier,” Nhung shared.

Sweet love story

With her own efforts, Nhung opened her own beauty salon, bought gifts for relatives, traveled ,... She is no longer the sensitive child who needed her parents to take care of her and pay attention to every little thing, but can be independent through her own labor.

And most importantly, Nhung is confident in herself, dares to love and be loved.

Nhung found the happy place of her life

For Nhung, love and marriage used to be distant things, but when she met Thanh Duong (born in 1999, from Binh Phuoc) - her current husband, it became close and real.

Nhung and Duong met through social networks, Duong was the one who took the initiative to make friends. After only a few conversations, he fell in love with the pretty girl.

Working about 3km from Nhung's shop, he stopped by every day to buy her breakfast. Nhung's special circumstances did not bother him in the slightest. On the contrary, he admired Nhung's will to live.

“There were many people who liked me and wanted to get to know me, but I didn’t dare to trust anyone. Marriage and having children were even more distant. But when I met him, everything changed completely.

He doesn't hesitate when I'm sick, is willing to carry me to the toilet or silently clean up if I accidentally have incontinence. The way he loves and cares for me makes me no longer self-conscious," Nhung shared.

Nhung is loved by her husband and his family very much.

The day she followed Thanh Duong home to meet her parents, Nhung was surprised by her future mother-in-law's reaction.

“My mother-in-law is kind and understanding. She told her son, ‘I won’t say who you love, but if you love Nhung, you have to be serious.’ I was deeply touched. Until now, she still loves and cares for us like in the beginning,” Nhung confided.

At the end of 2023, the couple officially became a family. Nhung's wedding had many special things. She was carried by her father and handed over to the groom. The moment the groom pushed the wheelchair, bringing the bride down the aisle, many people were moved to tears.

In 2024, Hong Nhung became a mother. She got pregnant naturally and safely welcomed her baby into the world at 36 weeks.

For a mother in a wheelchair, taking care of her children seems very difficult, but for Nhung, even that difficulty and hardship is also happiness. Because to her, children are the most precious gift in life.
