After successfully receiving a full master's scholarship from Cambridge University (UK) in 2021, the young woman continued to win a doctoral scholarship worth billions of VND at Oxford University (UK).
The owner of the two prestigious scholarships is Huynh Ngoc Minh Thi (24 years old), a former student majoring in biomedical science at the Vietnam-UK Research and Training Institute (VNUK) of the University of Danang.
Minh Thi thought she would never have the opportunity to study at Cambridge University, so she had no intention of applying for a scholarship. But then, Thi decided to "turn around" at the 90th minute. After 2 interviews, Thi was overwhelmed with happiness when she received a full master's scholarship at her dream school.

Sharing the secret to receiving a scholarship, Thi said: "In addition to academic results, English proficiency and essays, in my opinion the most important thing is to convince yourself that you are suitable and worthy of receiving that scholarship."
After graduating with honors in biomedical science from VNUK, Thi went to the UK to study for a master's degree in genomic science at Cambridge University and completed the program in January 2023. Four months later, Thi returned to Vietnam to prepare for her upcoming doctoral studies.
The field that Thi is researching is the isolation and sequencing of bacteria. "Based on the fact that after a period of using antibiotics, it will lead to drug resistance, the field that I am researching will help find the rate of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. From that result, doctors can consider how to use antibiotics effectively," Thi shared.
Thi added: "I realized that the path I chose was the right one. After a period of studying and researching, I found this field very interesting. The more I studied, the more it stimulated my curiosity, so I decided to continue studying for a doctorate."
After 6 years of working in biomedical science, Thi said the most difficult thing in research is not finding results but whether or not you can persevere to the end.
According to Thi, to pursue this field, students need to be patient, diligent in research and proactive in learning. "During the research process, the thing that made me happiest was participating in conferences to share my research. At that time, I was very happy and proud because my efforts were listened to and accepted by everyone," Thi said.
Minh Thi also shared: "For me, learning is never enough. So in the future, I will continue to learn, improve what I lack and set a goal to have a scientific article."
As Thi's former teacher, Dr. Nguyen Van Huy, Head of the Science and Technology Group, in charge of biomedical science at VNUK, commented: "Thi is very serious about studying, her influence in class is very high. Thi's reports are very neat and good. During group work , I highly appreciate this girl's presentation and persuasion skills. Moreover, Thi is also a very independent and active learner."
