Emergency food and water
Emergency backpacks typically contain three to four small bottles of water, with a shelf life of five years, and two packets of emergency rice, which can be pre-mixed with water (takes about 60 minutes if using cold water and 15 minutes if using hot water), with a shelf life of about seven years.
However, these are just the bare minimum food items to bring if you have to evacuate. Experts recommend bringing other dry, light foods as well. In fact, a person should have at least three days’ worth of rations, ideally a week’s worth. The recommended amount of water to bring is about two liters per day, every day, for three days.
Many people prepare a cloth bag that can hold about 5 liters of water. In case of a disaster, they can go to the nearest water station (also known as higaiji kyusui steshon) to fill it up and use it.
