In 2012, the Melis sisters, who live in Sardinia, Italy, were recognized by the Guinness World Records Committee as the world's oldest living family with a combined age of 861. Although the eldest sister, Consolata Melis, passed away in 2015 at the age of 108, she is still recognized as the town's oldest resident.
The family revealed that there are three things that always appear on the menu every day including sourdough bread, minestrone soup and a glass of red wine. The family said that they almost eat together at every meal. These are all dishes that they like, not because they are forced to follow a certain regime.

The nine Melis siblings believe that eating Minestrone soup is the secret to their longevity. It is also a staple dish for many families on this Italian island famous for its longevity and located in the Bluezones.
Minestrone soup is a traditional Sardinian soup made with three types of beans: chickpeas, pinto beans, and white beans, along with a variety of vegetables and grains. They also tend to eat a lot of seasonal vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
According to scientists , beans are considered the "perfect superfood" in the diet. Therefore, it is no surprise that the world's longest-lived family prioritizes using them every day.
Beans typically contain up to 21% protein and 77% complex carbohydrates. They are also packed with fiber, provide a wide range of nutrients, and can be made into a variety of delicious and affordable dishes.
The term Bluezones was coined to refer to five regions of the world where people typically live to be over 100, including Loma Linda (California); Okinawa (Japan); Sardinia (Italy); Nicoya (Costa Rica) and Ikaria (Greece).
Researchers have focused on monitoring the habits of people in these lands to find out the secret to longevity - besides genetic factors. From there, people have drawn some common habits of people in this land such as: Letting the body move naturally, prioritizing foods of plant origin, only eating until 80% full, creating connections and attachments in the community, putting loved ones first.
The foods that Bluezones residents prioritize are fruits, fresh vegetables, nuts, whole grains, olive oil...
