Accept failure to reap success
Teacher Phuong Dung currently teaches fine arts at Thoi Hoa Secondary School (O Mon District, Can Tho City ). With the desire to preserve and conserve the craft of making fabric flowers, she has been researching and learning to make them since 2019.
In addition to class time, Ms. Dung spends time making fabric flowers.
At first, she tried her hand at the new field, she mainly made burned fabric flowers (using a lighter to create shapes - PV) with simple designs. However, the products were not new, not eye-catching, and could not create small flowers or complex details. Therefore, she continued to learn how to make dyed fabric flowers (using a heat set to create shapes - PV) to create a unique look for the products.
After hundreds of failed flower petals, Ms. Dung still persisted in experimenting. Up to now, she has succeeded in creating artistic dyed fabric flower products with nearly 50 flower designs, with eye-catching colors such as: roses, orchids, peonies, chrysanthemums, dahlias, royal poincianas, etc.

"The burned flowers are mainly shaped with a lighter, while the dyed flowers are created with a heat set, which is a soldering iron, dyeing fabric to create the correct flower color or to your liking. The initial difficulties were mainly due to not being proficient in using the heat set, so sometimes it was too hot and burned my hands, even burning the fabric. There were many failures, but I gained a lot of experience, gradually mastering the color mixing and shaping stages to create the most standard flower color or to match the customer's wishes," Ms. Dung shared.

According to Ms. Dung, the process of creating a flower with its own beauty begins with choosing white fabric; dyeing; waiting for it to dry, cutting to shape the petals; using a heat set to create the shape, veins, and leaves of the flower, making them soft and flexible...
With high applicability, the dyed flower products made by Ms. Dung can easily meet many customer needs such as being used as corsages, dresses, bridal hairpins, decorative potted flowers, flower paintings, night lights, etc.
Up to now, Ms. Dung has made more than 50 flower designs to pin on shirts.
Unique flower designs from shape to color
Ms. Dung said that because there is no template, most of the products are unique in both shape and color. She often takes inspiration from flowers in nature to visualize the shape and model and then starts making them. Each product takes from 5 to 8 hours to complete.
Every month, Ms. Dung sells more than 100 products of burned flowers and dyed fabric flowers.
"Because it is handmade, there is no template but only a shape in mind, so from the color combination to the flower shape, it is impossible to be 100% similar to the previous flowers. Therefore, the product is completely unique," said Ms. Dung.
Up to now, Ms. Dung has created thousands of flower designs from simple to complex. For her, making fabric flowers is a love, so she can spend many hours, many days to complete the product and create endlessly.

Currently, she mainly makes fabric flowers according to orders, selling more than 100 products of burned flowers and colored fabric flowers each month. The price of burned flowers ranges from 100,000 - 200,000 VND/flower, artistic fabric flowers range from 500,000 - 800,000 VND/product (depending on the difficulty and completion time). In addition, she also creates 3D shaped animals from fabric such as birds, cranes, etc. Thanks to that, she has a decent monthly income.

"For burned flower products, 20-30 flowers can be made per day, but for fabric-dyed flowers, only 1-3 flowers can be made. Therefore, each flower product will have a different customer segment. Usually, fabric-dyed flowers will be ordered more by designers, fashion companies, wedding dress companies, etc.," said Ms. Dung.

"I want to spread the passion and value of fabric flower art to everyone. I hope that the experience of making flowers will not only satisfy your passion, but also when you look at the colorful flowers you made, you will feel happy, relaxed and when you attach them to your clothes, they will be more delicate and perfect," teacher Phuong Dung shared.
Always encourage students to draw emotionally.
To avoid boring art lessons, Ms. Dung always innovates teaching methods, conveying all her passion and enthusiasm to students. At the same time, she guides students to actively study, explore and create their favorite topics and works. "In class, I always encourage students to draw based on their emotions, ideas and topics they see in reality. Through that, students can freely create and create their own paintings according to their preferences, helping to develop the potential of each student," said Ms. Dung.
Recently, Ms. Dung also passed on her passion for making fabric flowers by instructing students to make burned fabric flowers and dyed fabric flowers to participate in the District-level Science and Technology Innovation Competition for the 2023-2024 school year.
"Currently, I have 3 students who are being guided by me to make burnt fabric flowers and dyed fabric flowers. They are very interested and passionate about making fabric flowers. Most of them are skillful, so after only 1 day of teaching, they can basically make some fabric flower models such as roses, daisies, etc. I am very happy to have passed on my passion to them, so that they can not only make products for the contest but also make them to give to friends and relatives," teacher Dung excitedly shared.
