Opportunity for publishing industry to break through

The Book and Digital Transformation Week organized by the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City (from October 25 to 31) has created an opportunity for the publishing industry to expand its readership in the digital age. Readers not only access traditional printed books but also experience many types of audiobooks and e-books, showing that digital transformation is strongly impacting the city's publishing, printing and distribution industry.

In the chain of digital transformation activities of all industries (including the publishing industry), the digital transformation process, electronic publishing, and technology development are key issues that receive attention from publishing and distribution units. In recent years, the publishing industry of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general has had specific products associated with the digital transformation process.

With the policy of the City People's Committee, the response activities are not a single activity but must be a series of activities responding to National Digital Transformation Day, showing the increasingly important role of digital transformation in all fields.

In 2024, the Department of Information and Communications coordinated with the Vietnam Publishing Association (Southern Representative Office) and the Ho Chi Minh City Printing Association to organize the seminars "Digital transformation - Opportunities and challenges of current publishing activities", the workshop "Digital capacity framework for the printing industry" associated with digital transformation in the field of publishing, printing and distribution with the participation and sharing of leading experts.

Notably, at the recent Book and Digital Transformation Week, city readers had a more comprehensive view of digital transformation in the publishing sector. With 24 participating units, more than 30 programs and exchange activities, the highlight of this year's week is that readers will experience more than 3,000 e-books, audiobooks as well as new forms of book access, and experiencing book technology associated with digital transformation will also bring a deeper insight into digital transformation in publishing, promoting the application of technology in this activity.

According to Mr. Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Department of Information and Communications, this year's Book and Digital Transformation Week introduced to the public an online exhibition space with 498 documents, bringing new and meaningful experiences. Creating an online space is also part of the digital transformation development orientation of the publishing industry, creating new experiences in introducing the process of building and developing Vietnam's revolutionary publishing to readers.

At the Book and Digital Transformation Week event, Bookas Joint Stock Company organized a program to launch the Bookas Audiobook application. This is one of the newest units in the city to participate in the audiobook sector to suit the development trend of the times. General Director of Bookas Joint Stock Company Vu Cao Cuong said: Science and technology is soft power, an important factor in multinational competition.

Above all, within the framework of private enterprises, science and technology are powerful “weapons” to help businesses become more complete, more modern and have more opportunities to approach customers. “Grasping the trend of digital transformation, and at the same time clearly assessing the market distribution of paper books and digital books, we decided to create Bookas together.

The audio versions created by Bookas, integrated with AI technology and exclusive voices, combine spatial sounds, bringing truly interesting sensory experiences to readers." According to Dr. Ha Thanh Van, readers today still love the traditional reading habit of using paper books.

However, with the rapid development of science and technology, it is necessary to provide many modern ways of reading books such as using audiobooks, e-books, etc. Readers will have more convenient access to books, thereby contributing to the development of reading culture.

According to the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution ( Ministry of Information and Communications ), there are currently 57 publishing houses nationwide under the management agencies; of which, in Ho Chi Minh City, there are two publishing houses under the City Party Committee and the City People's Committee, 28 publishing house branches, four representative offices of foreign publishers in Ho Chi Minh City and four university publishing houses.

Of the 57 publishers, up to now, more than 20 publishers and book distributors have been licensed to publish and distribute e-books; in which, mainly publishing and book distributors are in Ho Chi Minh City. Many types of modern electronic publications have been published, especially the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in publishing has brought about impressive results.

The number of enterprises participating in the production of electronic publications in close cooperation with technology enterprises has shown considerable effectiveness. However, opportunities always come with challenges. That is, the situation of copyright infringement, fake books, and illegal book distribution on the internet. According to Mr. Le Hoang, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Book Street Company, these challenges are also a great concern for the publishing industry and society in general.

Director of the City Department of Information and Communications Lam Dinh Thang said: In the new development stage, the publishing, printing and distribution industry clearly identifies digital transformation as both a great opportunity and a "key" to creating a breakthrough for the industry to continue its role and mission in the following years.

Therefore, with the role of state management of publishing, printing and distribution activities in the area, the Department of Information and Communications will regularly coordinate with competent agencies, relevant functional agencies and recommend the leaders of the City People's Committee to have practical measures to remove difficulties and challenges of digital transformation in publishing today, especially the issue of copyright and copyright protection in the context of digital transformation to develop and improve the quality of publishing activities.
