1 week left to register for university entrance exam, things candidates need to know

In 2025, with many changes in university admissions, how will the Ministry of Education and Training and schools carry out the virtual admission and filtering process? What should candidates pay attention to to avoid losing the opportunity to be admitted?

The registration period on the Ministry of Education and Training ’s system is only one week away, but many candidates and their parents still do not fully understand this year’s admission process. They are confused by the many separate regulations of each school, not knowing how to arrange their wishes.

Understand the process correctly

The biggest change in the 2025 admissions is the end of early admissions and the equivalence conversion between admission combinations and methods. Whether candidates are eligible for direct admission or high school transcripts, ability and thinking assessment test scores, etc., they must still register their wishes on the general admission system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - senior expert of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training) - said that the ministry has recently announced the score distribution of high school exam subjects, helping candidates to compare and determine where their scores are in the university entrance exam. This helps them grasp the level of competition of each major/school, in order to make the right decision when registering their wishes.

Admission information has been fully announced on the university websites. On July 21, the ministry will announce the threshold to ensure the quality of admission to the health sector, teacher training sector and the difference in scores between high school exam subject groups according to percentiles.

Regarding the difference in scores of the competency and thinking assessment exams, training institutions will deploy and announce. From there, candidates will know the difference in scores compared to their exam results in the admission methods and combinations, and have a basis for registering and adjusting their wishes.

"The time to register for admission on the ministry's system will end at 5:00 p.m. on July 28, after which the system will close. After this time, schools will base on the data on the system to conduct admission. Candidates need to pay attention to this so as not to miss the opportunity to register, adjust, and add their wishes.

From July 29 to 5 p.m. August 5, candidates must pay the online admission fee through the system according to the region, for the number of registered wishes. Understanding the admission process and the notes in each stage will help candidates avoid losing the opportunity to enter university due to small mistakes," Mr. Hung emphasized.

Admission principles

Explaining the admission principles on the system of the Ministry of Education and Training, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry - said that at this time, all candidates must register their wishes on the system of the Ministry, even if they have previously registered as required at the schools and paid the fees afterwards. At that time, all candidates' wishes will be recorded.

During the virtual filtering process, the first thing the ministry will do is return data to the schools to calculate bonus points (bonus points in admission according to regulations do not exceed 10%). After the schools add bonus points, the candidates' score data is pushed back to the ministry's system to begin the admission process.

The admission process will be carried out according to the expected benchmark scores provided by each school (each school will provide a different score for each major). The system will process candidates' registrations based on the order of their preferences, only considering the highest preference that meets the benchmark score for each candidate. If the first preference is not accepted, the next preferences will be automatically considered.

For example, a candidate places his/her first choice in a major at school A and several other choices in the same school or different schools. School A takes 25 points (including bonus points and priority points) and in the first choice, if the candidate has a score greater than or equal to 25 points, he/she will be admitted and the admission process of this candidate will stop.

When considering admission, all methods are considered at the same time. The candidate with the best score in the method that meets the standard score will be admitted. For separate admission methods (review of academic records, admission combined with foreign language certificates, priority admission...), if the candidate has complied with the requirements (if any) of the schools, the system will have score data for each method. On the system, candidates do not need to register for the admission method, only register the major code and school code.

"When registering for admission on the system, candidates must arrange their preferences in order of priority from highest to lowest, with preference 1 being the highest. If they are admitted to a higher preference, the following preferences will be automatically canceled. Therefore, the most favorite preference should be placed in the number 1 position regardless of whether the chance of admission is high or low," Mr. Nhan advised.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy - said that candidates have the right to register for many wishes and many schools, interspersed with each other, but can only be admitted to the highest qualified wish, based on the score and admission criteria of that school. This requires candidates to pay close attention when arranging the order of wishes, to ensure the opportunity to be admitted to their favorite major.

How to filter virtual?

According to Dr. Pham Tan Ha - University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), the virtual filtering process in university admissions is a technique used to eliminate candidates with duplicate wishes or who are not qualified to be admitted to a certain field of study.

Specifically, the Ministry of Education and Training and schools will coordinate to use software to filter applications nationwide, ensuring that each candidate is only admitted to the highest application they have registered for, avoiding the situation where a candidate is admitted to many majors/schools at the same time.

"The virtual filtering process does not only take place within a school, but also between different schools and majors. The Ministry will conduct virtual filtering nationwide to ensure that there is no overlap between candidates, and at the same time, schools will receive enough candidates according to their enrollment quotas," Mr. Ha further explained.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's enrollment schedule, there will be 6 virtual filtering sessions (processing applications) taking place from August 16 to 5:00 p.m. on August 20.

Double check the information

MSc. Le Van Hien, head of the training department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, emphasized that candidates need to carefully check the admission information of the schools, including majors, admission methods, subject combinations and additional criteria. Each school has its own requirements, so it is very important to refer to the official information on the school's website.

He also paid special attention to updating foreign language certificates if candidates want to use this certificate in their application. Schools can ask candidates to submit foreign language certificates or update them in the admission system. If not, the foreign language certificate will not be considered for admission.
