On June 1st, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) held its regular monthly press conference for May, chaired by Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, in May 2026, the Ministry continued to comprehensively implement key tasks related to institutional reform, science and technology development, innovation, and national digital transformation, achieving many positive results and contributing to socio-economic development. The proportion of high-tech goods exports reached 50.76% by the first quarter of 2026.
According to StartupBlink's Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 report, Vietnam has risen 5 places to 50th in the world , its highest ranking ever.
By May 2026, the country will have a cumulative total of 963 science and technology enterprises, 20 science and technology exchange platforms, and 37 innovation centers in 26 out of 34 provinces and cities.
The rate of online applications submitted throughout the entire process is expected to reach 50.2% by May 2026; the proportion of added value from the digital economy in 2025 is estimated to reach 14.02% of GDP, equivalent to approximately 72.1 billion USD.
Vietnam's mobile broadband speed reached 207.3 Mbps, ranking 11th out of 104 countries; fixed broadband speed reached 287.33 Mbps, ranking 11th out of 154 countries. The country has 110.5 million mobile broadband internet subscribers, including 24.29 million 5G subscribers; and 25.62 million fixed broadband internet subscribers.
Revenue from postal services in May 2026 is estimated to reach VND 8,500 billion, a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
One of the topics of interest at the press conference was the current status of phone number verification. Regarding this issue, Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Department Nguyen Anh Cuong stated that the number of unverified phone numbers has decreased from approximately 34 million to around 25 million. In the past nearly two months, approximately 9 million subscribers have successfully verified their numbers.
Authorities also recorded approximately 1.6 million phone numbers that were not registered to the rightful owner, forwarding them to network operators for one-way blocking and requiring users to standardize their information.
Mr. Cuong commented that 25 million unverified subscribers is still a very large number.
According to the plan, after June 15th, all phone numbers whose usage status has not been verified on VNeID will be blocked for outgoing calls to require standardization.
According to information from mobile network operators, a common situation is that people use phone numbers that are not registered in their name for a long time without realizing it, only to find out later that the number is registered under someone else's name. If the previous owner denies ownership, the current user simply needs to follow the steps to standardize the information.
However, if a dispute arises when both parties confirm they are using the number, the process becomes more complex. In case of a dispute, the actual user will have to prove ownership through specific evidence such as a list of recently contacted phone numbers, billing statements, and other relevant documents. The network provider will use this information to determine who is actually using the subscriber number in order to proceed with the transfer.
This standardization provides an opportunity for citizens to review and enhance their awareness of protecting their personal identities, avoiding future problems and disputes over rights.
