Premier League's £1bn shopping spree

Premier League clubs are on an unprecedented spending spree, with the total value of player purchases set to hit £1bn in the summer transfer window of 2025.

With nearly six weeks left before the transfer window closes on 31 August, the pace and scale of spending by the Premier League’s big four – Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City – is leaving rivals such as Newcastle United, Aston Villa and the rest of European football in the dust. It shows the huge financial gap between the Premier League’s top four and the rest of Europe.

Top 4 domination

Chelsea are on track to become the second Premier League club to spend close to £300m this summer, having completed deals for Liam Delap, João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Dário Essugo, Willian Estêvão and Mamadou Sarr. According to The Athletic , Enzo Maresca's side are also close to signing RB Leipzig striker Xavi Simons and Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, with the combined transfer fee potentially reaching more than £150m.

Even if Chelsea can offload the likes of Renato Veiga, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Nicolas Jackson, they could splash the cash even further. The Blues are expected to raise more than £200m from player sales, with Nkunku attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Italian clubs. Chelsea could also sign Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United) and Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), underlining their ambition to build a young and quality squad.

It's not just Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are spending big. Liverpool have spent nearly £300m. Arsenal will also surpass the £250m mark if they complete the deals for Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting CP) and Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace). Manchester City have spent over £150m this summer and have no intention of stopping.

Typical deals of Chelsea, MU or Liverpool this summer.

In total, the top four teams in the Premier League last season were able to spend in excess of £1bn, a figure in stark contrast to Newcastle and Aston Villa – the teams that finished fifth and sixth – who did not spend more than £100m combined.

Wealth gap

Newcastle and Aston Villa, who have challenged for the top four in recent seasons, have struggled in the transfer market, with Newcastle missing out on a number of top targets, while Villa have had to sell stars such as Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey before making a purchase due to financial pressures.

"Dark horse" Nottingham Forest also faced difficulties when losing Anthony Elanga to Newcastle and had to keep Morgan Gibbs-White. Two other traditional clubs in the top 6, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, also spent heavily.

Manchester United spent £133m and could increase if they sign a new striker, while Tottenham spent £122m and could reach £181m. Despite their recent decline in form and achievements, Manchester United and Tottenham can still spend lavishly, even surpassing other big clubs in La Liga or Bundesliga.

Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City's £1bn spending spree is creating a huge gap with the rest of the Premier League, especially Newcastle and Aston Villa, in the summer transfer window of 2025.

Chelsea and Liverpool lead the way with deals exceeding £300m each, but Arsenal and Man City are also promising to spend more in the future. At the current rate and scale of spending, last season's top four are unlikely to be overtaken in 2025/26.
