My child said stopping extra classes is like having a second Tet holiday.

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Quyen (Bac Tu Liem, Hanoi ) shared her children's joy after the school announced the suspension of extra classes.

Ms. Minh Quyen's child is in 6th grade at a public school in Bac Tu Liem district. Before Circular 29 came into effect, her child attended extra classes three afternoons a week at school. In addition, she enrolled her child in math classes with the homeroom teacher twice a week.

Since last Thursday, Ms. Quyen's child has completely stopped attending extra classes. "It feels like a second Tet holiday" is how happy her child is after being able to stay home every afternoon during the week and not having to go to extra math classes on Sundays.

"I have two children. The older one is in 10th grade. The two sisters can cook their own meals. In the afternoon, I text them to remind them to study and complete their homework before playing whatever they want."

Not only are my children happy, but I also feel relieved. I don't know what their academic results will be like in the future, but for now, I'm glad they don't have to be overwhelmed with studying.

"This past week, the teacher hasn't sent any messages about the children neglecting their homework. They're still conscientious about completing their assignments. As for increased phone use, that's unavoidable," Ms. Quyen shared.

Ms. Vu Thi Phuong (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) has two children, one in 9th grade and the other in 6th grade. "Happy" is the shared feeling of both of them.

"Both my children have a habit of self-studying, so stopping extra classes hasn't affected them much. My 9th-grade daughter was initially a little worried about math. But after trying to learn it on her own, she said she understood it. She aims to get into Kim Lien High School, so she's working very hard."

"For a sixth-grade boy, extra classes are fine, but not extra classes are also fine. He's not paying attention. Every time I ask him about his homework, he says he's already done it in class. Besides, because he's passionate about STEM, not having extra classes would give him more time for this hobby," Ms. Phuong said.

"Parents whose children are proactive and self-motivated in their studies are almost always happy," commented Ms. Nguyen Minh Trang (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi).

Ms. Trang is both a parent of an 11th-grade student and a teacher. Her child is preparing for the IELTS and SAT exams, so she needs to focus all her time on it. Stopping tutoring unexpectedly turned out to be beneficial.

However, according to Ms. Trang, one week is too short a time to say whether stopping extra classes is good or bad for students, even those in the top group.

"Learning cannot be separated from examinations. Tests are one of the important measures for evaluating learning effectiveness. However, it is clear that students are now more relaxed and at ease."

"Psychological comfort can be a motivator for some students and a barrier for others. So, even if it's enjoyable, parents need to be more attentive to their children to establish rules and discipline for studying," Ms. Trang expressed.

From another perspective, Ms. Hoang Thi Van, a chemistry teacher in Hai Duong , believes that the new regulations on tutoring disadvantage disadvantaged students and those around the average level.

"The reality is, not all students are fortunate enough to receive attention from their families. In nearly 20 years of work, I have met many students who live far away from their parents, or who have been neglected by their parents. Without close guidance from their teachers, it is very difficult for these students to progress."

Don't expect teachers to be able to teach students the ability to learn independently. The ability to learn independently is usually only found in children who receive a good education from a young age, including both family and school.

This is something that disadvantaged students don't have. They need more time from their teachers. To be frank, they need more extra learning.

"For those students, no teacher or school would charge a fee for teaching. But the new regulation that even free teaching can't exceed two lessons per week means the knowledge dries up before it even has a chance to sink in," Ms. Van stated.

Ms. Vân expressed her wish for additional guidelines to avoid disadvantaging disadvantaged students.

"Each student's abilities and circumstances are different, requiring teachers to apply different tools and methods to help students achieve results. Quantifying extra tutoring time and applying a single figure to all students goes against the principle of differentiated instruction," Ms. Van emphasized.
