At noon on July 10, Lieutenant Colonel Vo Minh Thang, Chief of Soc Trang Ward Police (Can Tho City) said that after nearly a day of receiving, caring for and searching for relatives, this afternoon, the Ward Police handed over the lost 5-year-old boy to his family.

At 11pm on July 9, Soc Trang Ward Police received a boy about 5 or 6 years old wandering alone on Hung Vuong Street (Soc Trang Ward, Can Tho City) showing signs of being lost. He was brought to the Ward Police by local people for handover.
According to local residents, at 6 p.m. the same day, they saw the child appear at a coffee shop on Hung Vuong Street without an adult. Local residents thought the child was lost, so they kept an eye on him and waited for his family to pick him up. At 11 p.m., the shop closed but no one had come to pick him up yet, so local residents took him to the Soc Trang Ward Police to take care of him and find his family.
After receiving the child, on one hand, the ward police officers helped the child eat and drink, on the other hand, they asked for information about the child's family and parents, but because the child could not speak clearly (speech was slurred), the officers could not find information to contact the family.
To get the earliest clue, Soc Trang Ward Police used social media to post pictures and information about the child, hoping the online community would join in finding the child’s relatives. “At 9am on July 10, a man came to the Ward Police claiming to be the child’s relative, but because he did not have all the necessary documents, the Police could not hand over the child,” said a Ward Police officer.

Talking to this person, we learned that the child's name is UN (born in 2020). His mother is LTMH (born in 1988, residing in Phu Loi ward, Can Tho city). Q is the stepchild of H. The man who came to receive the child is Q's stepfather, the Vice Chairman. T said that he and H got together a few years ago. The family's circumstances are difficult, H used to work as a worker for a local seafood processing company but due to health problems, she had to quit; she has no house and has to rent a house to live in.
“I have been living in Hoa Tu commune (Can Tho city) for the past few days so I have not heard anything about the mother and child. This morning, an acquaintance texted me saying that the police are looking for relatives for a child. Looking at the picture, I recognized Q. so I tried to contact his mother but could not. Worried about him, I took a motorbike taxi from Hoa Tu to pick him up. But because I did not have any documents proving my relationship with him, the police officers instructed me to find his mother to come and pick up my child. Luckily, I found my wife and went to the ward police station to pick him up. We thank the Soc Trang ward police for taking care of him during this time,” Mr. T. shared.
