Tech giant Google began testing AI Overviews — a search feature with results summarized by artificial intelligence (AI) in Google Search — two years ago and has continued to expand the feature to new regions and languages.
Google considers this a huge success as AI Overviews is now used by more than 1.5 billion people in more than 100 countries and territories every month.
According to Google, AI Overviews is a feature that helps users search more easily. This feature provides concise but informative summaries of search topics, leveraging the power of AI to help users explore information more efficiently, in detail, and comprehensively.
AI Overviews compiles results from around the web to answer specific questions. When a user searches for something like “What is generative AI?” AI Overviews displays AI-generated text at the top of a Google Search results page.
While it has reduced traffic to some publishers, Google believes that this feature, along with other AI-powered search capabilities, will help drive revenue and increase engagement on Google Search.
Google introduced ads in AI Overviews in October 2024. Google then began testing AI Mode, which allows users to ask complex questions and follow along in the Google Search information flow.
On April 24, Google also mentioned the growth of other AI-based search features, including Circle to Search.
Circle to Search, which lets users highlight something on their smartphone screen and ask questions about it, is now on more than 250 million devices — up from about 200 million at the end of 2024, according to Google. Circle to Search usage is growing nearly 40% per quarter, according to Google.
According to Google, image searches across its platforms are growing at a steady pace.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that searches through Google Lens, Google's AI-powered multimodal image search and analysis tool, have increased by 5 billion since October 2024.
Meanwhile, the number of shoppers on Google Lens increased by more than 10% in Q1 2025.
Google achieved the above results while the company's operations are under close supervision by regulatory agencies.
The US Department of Justice has asked Google to spin off Chrome after a court found that Google had an illegal monopoly in online search.
Meanwhile, District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia recently concluded that Google must be responsible for "intentionally gaining and maintaining a monopoly position" in the publisher ad servers market and the advertising exchange market - where buyers and sellers connect./.
