New Zealand has launched a new predictive tool that could help farmers better prepare for extreme weather conditions.

Developed by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the Ministry for Primary Industries, the free tool uses the latest artificial intelligence and weather modelling to forecast weekly rainfall, dry weather and drought risk 35 days in advance. It is updated daily to capture the latest changes in the climate system. According to NIWA, it provides long-term forecasts at a much higher spatial resolution than previously possible.

NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll said the tool increases the frequency and narrows the range of rainfall, dry and drought forecasts, providing better warnings of future dry spells.
