What to expect at Meta Connect 2025

Meta is planning to launch two new smart glasses, the first of which will include a built-in display. It may be called “Celeste” and will cost around $800. The small screen will show notifications and previews, but won’t support full-blown augmented reality. The glasses will also come with an EMG wristband for hand gesture control.

In addition to the Hypernova, Meta may also introduce a new version of its screen-less Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Updates include improvements to the camera, battery life, and AI integration. Meta is also opening up the platform to third-party developers, promising to expand the functionality of its smart glasses.

AI continues to be a big focus at Connect. Meta AI now has one billion monthly users. The company is developing “character” chatbots that speak non-English, despite some criticism over safety. Additionally, CEO Zuckerberg may share more about his “superintelligence” ambitions and give an update on the delayed Llama 4.

While AI is taking the spotlight, the metaverse is still present at the event. CTO Andrew Bosworth teased Horizon Worlds software updates, including AI-powered NPCs. Expect more information on third-party VR headsets from the likes of ASUS and Lenovo, along with the possibility of a simplified version of the Codec holographic avatar.

China launches anti-dumping investigation into chips imported from the US

China's Ministry of Commerce has announced the launch of an anti-dumping investigation into certain types of similar IC chips imported from the United States. The investigation was initiated following a petition by a provincial semiconductor industry association representing domestic enterprises.

The investigation focuses on two types of chips: commodity interface ICs and gate driver ICs, which use process technology of 40 nanometers or larger. These are common chips in many industrial and consumer electronics.

According to the announcement, the investigation is expected to end on September 13, 2026. However, in some special cases, the deadline can be extended by 6 months.

On the same day, China's Ministry of Commerce also launched another investigation into the US's discriminatory measures against China's integrated circuit industry. The ministry said it had collected preliminary evidence showing that the US measures were discriminatory and restrictive in nature, violating China's foreign trade law.

British workers wary of AI

A survey by Ipsos found that 33% of British workers do not tell their bosses about the use of AI tools at work, with many fearing that disclosure will cast doubt on their competence.

More than half of respondents believe that AI threatens the fabric of society. Only 17% think AI is a good substitute for human interaction, while 63% disagree.

Many feel stigmatized if they use AI too much. Another study from Henley Business School found that nearly half of workers do not receive formal guidance from their companies on how to use AI, and more than 25% say they do not receive enough support.

Labour leader Keir Starmer wants to “inject AI into the veins” of the UK economy . Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is set to visit the UK, accompanied by Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Jensen Huang (Nvidia), to promote AI cooperation and invest in the UK’s largest data center.

Gaia Marcus of the Ada Lovelace Institute warns of a “trust gap” between government ambitions and public perceptions, stressing the need to assess the impact of AI not just in the lab but in everyday life.
