The residency program is one of the most difficult and rigorous training levels for new medical graduates. Candidates must pass an entrance exam with a large amount of knowledge, and at the same time undergo continuous study and practice at the hospital.
According to Decision 19/2006/QD-BYT, candidates for the residency exam must meet many criteria: graduate with a good degree or higher; not be disciplined at the level of warning during their studies; not be older than 27; and be healthy enough to work long-term in the medical field (some fields also have their own health requirements).
Compared to graduate or specialty I programs, the residency exam is considered much more difficult. In particular, each candidate can only take the exam once, with a very limited number of places. Some specialties only recruit a few people each year.
The Ministry of Health considers this a necessary program to train good doctors with practical skills in hospitals. In Vietnam, there are currently 13 schools training resident physicians, of which Hanoi Medical University is the oldest (since 1974).
