Ministry of Education and Training: School counselors must support students' psychological problems

(Dan Tri) - According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the principle of school counseling work must be to put the learner at the center and not discriminate in order to support students' psychological problems.

This content is mentioned in Circular No. 18/2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training on guidance regarding school counseling and social work, which has just been issued.

According to the Circular, the purpose of school counseling and social work is to enhance students' capacity to prevent, identify, resolve, and seek assistance in overcoming difficulties related to learning, psychology, and social relationships.

In addition, it is necessary to cultivate life skills and develop appropriate attitudes and behaviors in social relationships, contributing to the development of students' personalities; and to strengthen coordination between schools, families, society, and relevant organizations.

The circular specifies the content of school counseling and social work in schools, encompassing many important areas closely linked to the practical needs of students regarding academic issues, gender, social relationships, psychology, life skills, career guidance, etc.

In principle, this activity ensures the rights, safety, and security of information; and the right of learners to participate voluntarily and make their own decisions.

The learner is at the center, without discrimination; ensuring equality, objectivity, and standards between learners and those providing school counseling and social work.

Focus on students' strengths, respect their individual characteristics and circumstances; ensure that support is provided promptly when students encounter difficulties or need counseling.

The work includes providing counseling and support for students' psychological issues such as prevention, screening, early detection, and response to psychological difficulties; providing psychological counseling and consultation for students with psychological problems; and connecting them to psychological services when needed.

In particular, for students facing difficulties or whose needs exceed the school's capacity, it is necessary to coordinate with families to connect them with institutions and experts providing school counseling services and professional social work to support the students.

The circular also requires schools to set up counseling and social work rooms that are private, quiet, easily accessible, and suitable for conducting counseling activities.
