Enhance life skills activities.

Le Do Secondary School (An Hai Ward) recently organized a themed flag-raising ceremony titled "Untangling Teenage Problems," with the participation of experts and counselors, attracting the attention of students from all grade levels. Ms. Pham Thi Hoa, the school principal, said that through games and quizzes, students participated enthusiastically. They had the opportunity to share and interact with psychology experts on topics related to school counseling and were introduced to the activities of the school counseling center.

Ms. Hoa said that although the students are young, they have many concerns about academic pressure, peer relationships, and romantic relationships. To support and listen to them, the school has a school counseling room and a counseling team consisting of homeroom teachers and psychology experts who are lecturers from the University of Education ( Da Nang University). Each month, homeroom teachers send out schedules for students to register, and support is available for them on Mondays and Fridays.

Similarly, Tran Quy Cap Secondary School (Cam Le Ward) organized awareness-raising activities to educate students about various forms of violence and child abuse, so they could learn how to protect themselves and support their friends when in danger. Nguyen Phu Huong Secondary School (Hoa Tien Commune) also had a life skills education program with the theme "Gratitude" for all students. Notably, through the heartfelt sharing of Mr. Ngo Ngoc Hoang Vuong, Principal of Ngu Hanh Son High School, students understood that gratitude is not just a simple thank you, but also an attitude towards life, a way of appreciating every small, good thing around them…

Listen to understand your students.

At the high school level, through weekly orientation sessions or career guidance and experiential activities, schools will integrate activities and lessons on school education for students. Mr. Le Thanh Son, Secretary of the Youth Union of Lien Chieu High School (Hai Van Ward), said that educating students on skills, behavior, socialization, and emotional control is essential. Therefore, school counseling needs to be carried out regularly, in all departments, integrated interdisciplinaryly or incorporated into the activities of the school's psychological counseling team. At the beginning of the school year, the school establishes a student psychological counseling team with the participation of the school's management board, the Youth Union, subject teachers, and the team's nhiệm vụ is to gather opinions and information from students to take preventive and timely corrective actions or help students adjust inappropriate behaviors…

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Loan, Vice Principal of Nguyen Hue Secondary School (Hai Chau Ward), believes that during adolescence, students experience many psychological and physiological changes. They are often confused by the changes in their bodies, easily irritable, sensitive, or want to assert themselves but lack the skills to control their emotions. They are curious about friendship, relationships, and sexuality, but are not always ready to share with their parents or teachers. Therefore, at this age, they greatly need the support of adults, with the family playing the most important role. Next is the support of the school with appropriate educational programs.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, lecturer at the Faculty of Educational Psychology - Social Work, University of Education (Da Nang University), students often face many difficulties during transitional periods between grades, such as from preschool to primary school, primary school to secondary school, or the entrance exam period for grade 10. Changes in environment, learning methods, and the pressure of academic achievement easily cause anxiety and stress. During adolescence, the psychophysiological changes further alter students' behavior and emotions, easily leading to conflicts, school violence, or withdrawal and reduced social interaction. Therefore, schools need to play a preventative role, equipping students with skills, knowledge, and awareness through class activities, flag-raising ceremonies, and extracurricular activities. However, at this age, simply equipping them is not enough; students need to participate and experience real-life situations through practical activities in clubs and simulated scenarios to develop their coping abilities.

Each school also needs a school counseling room to support students when they encounter psychological problems. Schools need to educate students on when to seek counseling, while also equipping them with skills to improve their mental health and protect themselves from risks. When signs of instability are detected, teachers can provide emergency support, helping students overcome difficulties promptly. Most importantly, it's crucial to build an environment where students are willing to listen and share.

Teachers should not only listen with their ears but also with an understanding of students' emotions and aspirations. Teachers also need training in listening skills and identifying the root causes of problems so that students feel safe sharing. When schools, families, and society work together, students will have a solid emotional foundation for holistic development.
