According to the Bangkok Post , Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin urged people not to panic over concerns about a resurgence of Covid-19 in Thailand, stressing that the disease is now classified as an endemic disease.
He said that although case numbers remained high, the virus generally caused only mild symptoms.
From January 1 to May 10, the Land of Golden Pagodas recorded 53,676 Covid-19 cases and 16 deaths.
The capital Bangkok recorded the most infections with 16,723 cases, peaking in the week from April 27 to May 3 with 14,349 cases, including two deaths.
Other provinces with significant numbers of cases include Chon Buri (1,177), Nonthaburi (866) and Rayong (553).
The number of new infections dropped to 12,543 in the week of May 4-10.
Seasonal factors and mass gatherings drive up infection rates, Mr Somsak said, adding: "Covid-19 is now a year-round disease. Although it is contagious, the severity has decreased."
“There is no need to panic, but people must remain vigilant and adhere to public health measures, such as wearing masks,” said Mr Somsak.
The Thai Health Minister also noted the steps to take if symptoms of Covid-19 are suspected, starting with immediate testing using the ATK kit when symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or fatigue appear.
If the test result is positive, the infected person must self-isolate, wear a mask, avoid contact with others, especially the elderly, pregnant women and patients with underlying chronic diseases, and carry out hygiene procedures.
Those with severe symptoms should seek medical attention promptly, he said.
