Amorim boldly changed tactics before the ball rolled. |
For the first time since taking charge of MU, Amorim has won two consecutive Premier League games and more importantly, the Portuguese coach did it by defeating the team's biggest rival right on their home field.
Before the ball rolled, Amorim soon had a mental advantage over coach Arne Slot thanks to a bold tactical decision. His change in the starting lineup, dropping Benjamin Sesko despite the striker having just scored two goals in a row, completely surprised Slot.
"We have seen Sesko play in the last three, four, five or six games, but when they come to Liverpool they change the formation. It's not the first time I've encountered such a situation," coach Slot told Sky Sports , expressing confusion at Amorim's sudden turnaround.
Amorim’s tactical decision paid off immediately. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring after just two minutes, leaving Liverpool in disarray against United’s dynamic attacking trio. Matheus Cunha, Mbeumo and Mason Mount were explosive, putting constant pressure on Liverpool’s defence and putting in an effective performance.
When asked why he left Sesko out, Amorim gave a very reasonable explanation: "Cunha has a characteristic that helps the team move forward. Konate and Van Dijk like to face each other in the air, so we need different options to win."
Things are still tough ahead, but this time Amorim was right to help MU beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 9 years.
