For over two years, Ms. Pham Thi Sang (residing in Hamlet 7B, Hoa Hiep Commune) has had no source of income as she has had to stay home to care for her elderly, ailing mother. | Ms. Pham Thi Sang hopes to receive medical treatment to alleviate her elderly mother's suffering from illness. |
In a small house in Hamlet 7B, Mrs. Xe (born in 1939) lies on her bed, frail after a long battle with illness. Beside her is Mrs. Pham Thi Sang (born in 1963), who has cared for her elderly, ailing mother for many years.
When Mrs. Xe fell and broke her hip, her family hoped she would be able to walk again after surgery. However, after multiple hip replacement surgeries, her health deteriorated further. “She had three surgeries. I kept thinking that if I could borrow money to pay for her treatment so she could walk again, I could still sell goods to earn money to pay off the debt. But now she’s bedridden,” Mrs. Sang said, her voice choked with emotion.
According to Ms. Sang, the cost of the first surgery exceeded 100 million VND, and subsequent surgeries incurred tens of millions of VND in additional expenses. Despite having health insurance, many medications, medical supplies, and care items were not covered, forcing the family to find ways to pay for them themselves. After a prolonged period of treatment, their current debt has exceeded 200 million VND.
Ms. Sang said that she used to sell fish and do extra work to make a living, but now she stays at home taking care of her elderly, ailing mother and has no income. At times, her mother needed to be constantly transferred for medical supplies. The cost of medicine alone was over 3 million dong per month, not including bandages, diapers, food, and transportation to the hospital.
The road to their house is narrow, making it quite difficult to take her mother for follow-up appointments. Each trip costs about 700,000 dong, but the family still struggles to make ends meet whenever Mrs. Xe is in severe pain. "The doctor said if the pain is too much, she'll need another surgery or a joint replacement. But my family can't afford it; we want to take her to the hospital but we don't have the money," Mrs. Sang said sadly.
Currently, Sang and her mother's lives depend mainly on the help of neighbors and local charitable groups.
Mr. Le Van Dau, Head of Hamlet 7B, confirmed that Ms. Pham Thi Sang's family is in difficult circumstances, living alone, and she is struggling to care for her mother while also trying to find money for medicine.
