The North American box office race this past weekend saw a notable showdown between two sequels set in two completely opposite worlds: glamorous fashion and bloody martial arts.

As a result, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” won by a narrow margin against “Mortal Kombat II.”

According to box office tracking firm Comscore, the Disney/20th Century Studios film grossed an additional $43 million over the past weekend in the US and Canada, bringing its global revenue to over $433 million in less than two weeks since its release, surpassing the original film's total revenue of $327 million in 2006.

This achievement also makes Disney the first film studio to surpass $2 billion in global revenue in 2026.

The film's biggest draw is the return of the iconic quartet that made the franchise a global success: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.

In this new installment, viewers are once again transported back to the glamorous yet cutthroat world of New York's Runway fashion scene.

Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep), the powerful, cold, and notoriously demanding editor-in-chief, continues to face the survival battle of the digital publishing industry, as social media and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming the entire traditional fashion industry.

Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), once a "country bumpkin" assistant, has now become a prominent figure in the media world, but is unexpectedly drawn back into Miranda Priestly's orbit in a new power struggle at Runway.

Meanwhile, Emily Charlton (played by Emily Blunt), formerly a harsh assistant, has become a powerful "behind-the-scenes force" in the international fashion world, creating witty and dramatic battles of wits with Miranda.

Critics have praised "The Devil Wears Prada 2" not only for its exploration of the glitz and glamour of high fashion but also for its portrayal of the pressures of fame, age, power, and the rapidly changing landscape of modern media.

Meanwhile, “Mortal Kombat II” —the fantasy martial arts blockbuster adapted from the popular video game—had an impressive opening weekend with $40 million in North America and $63 million worldwide.

“Mortal Kombat II” continues to explore the bloody battles between warriors possessing supernatural powers in the Mortal Kombat tournament to protect Earth.

While "The Devil Wears Prada 2" attracted a large female audience, Warner Bros.' "Mortal Kombat II" targeted a male audience more strongly.

According to a PostTrak survey, approximately 75% of ticket buyers for this film are male. The film currently has a total global opening weekend revenue of approximately $63 million, including $23 million from international markets.

Coming in third at the North American box office last week was "Michael," a biographical film about the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson, recreating the life of this legend from his time as a musical prodigy in the Jackson 5 to becoming a global pop icon, with the lead role played by Jackson's nephew, Jaafar Jackson.

In its third week of release, the film grossed an additional $36.5 million in the region, bringing its total global revenue to $577.4 million. In the US market alone, “Michael” has now surpassed the revenue of “Bohemian Rhapsody” —the famous film about the band Queen.

Observers predict that the 2026 summer movie season will be one of the most exciting in Hollywood in recent years, with competition spanning from action blockbusters and fashion films to musical biopics, family films, and animated movies.

The remaining titles in the Top 10 highest-grossing films in North America last week are a vivid testament to this diversity:

4. The Sheep Detectives - 15.9 million USD
5. Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour - 7.5 million USD
6. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie - $6.6 million
7. Project Hail Mary - $6.1 million
8. Hokum - $3.3 million
9. Deep Water - $780,274.
10. Animal Farm - 663,624 USD./.
