China's major internet platforms have pledged to improve their algorithms following a crackdown by the watchdog, according to SCMP . Beijing wants to tackle the misuse of technology to recommend content on apps and websites.
Last week, ByteDance’s Douyin, the domestic version of TikTok, announced that it would set up a safety center this year to make its recommendation system more transparent. The video social network also pledged to provide more diverse data sources and step up monitoring of misinformation and online violence.
On the same day, Pinduoduo, a low-cost shopping app operated by PDD Holdings - owner of Temu - also said it is "actively building a healthier ecosystem" to prevent "price discrimination based on big data".
China's Weibo social network
Xiaohongshu, a social network that is considered China's Instagram, posted a notice inviting users to learn about how its algorithm works. The platform also noted that people can turn off personalized recommendations at any time. The company said it is seeking public feedback on how to improve its algorithm.
The move comes as China launched a three-month campaign, starting in late November 2024, to address persistent algorithm-related issues. Chinese users have been complaining about algorithmic manipulation in recent times. Many have been isolated by content, while others have said they have not been treated fairly in terms of prices for items on the same platform. The main reason is that algorithms will flexibly suggest prices and content based on users' personal information, instead of selling at the original price. This has made many users feel indignant.
In response to user backlash, Beijing has launched a campaign to curb the influence of big tech companies. Regulators want platforms to tweak their algorithms, curb “addictive” recommendations, and manipulate trending items.
The campaign will also crack down on unfair pricing and discounts that target different demographic groups. After the adjustment, algorithms must ensure “healthy content” for both the elderly and children. Algorithm evaluation mechanisms and data security management systems will also be closely monitored.
