Whenever mentioning Vietnam, Mr. Botz László always has special feelings with unforgettable memories. On January 26, 1973, exactly 1 day before the Paris Agreement on ending the war and restoring peace in Vietnam was signed (January 27, 1973), Mr. László set foot in Hanoi.
At that time, he was one of the members of the first working group of the Hungarian delegation to the International Control and Supervision Commission (ICCS), also known as the Quadrilateral Commission, tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The scene of welcoming the Hungarian delegation in Hanoi 50 years ago left a deep impression on him. Looking at the bright, joyful faces of the Hanoi people, he felt the Vietnamese people's belief in the coming peace.
According to his assessment, Vietnam is one of the most developed countries in the past 50 years. After the war, with all their efforts, the Vietnamese people have made great strides in development that, according to him, not many countries in the world have been able to do.
“We are honored to support and help you during these difficult years and we are also honored to be your friends,” he said.
Chairman of the Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association Botz László presented books to Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations Do Viet Ha on May 26.
He recounted that after completing his mission and returning home, although he was always busy with work at home and abroad, especially after holding important responsibilities as a general in the Hungarian army, he still always had special attention and love for Vietnam.
He, along with fellow veterans and Hungarian officials who worked at the Quadrilateral Committee, founded the Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association in 1989, becoming a persistent and enthusiastic bridge between the two countries.
As the chairman of the Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association, he hopes to have more activities for the young generation in Hungary to understand more about Vietnam and have more friendly cooperation between the two peoples.
Over the past 30 years, the association's members have continuously contributed to fostering the Hungary-Vietnam relationship in the spirit of friendship, considering the introduction and promotion of Vietnamese culture in Hungary as a key task.
He said that he and his teammates in the following years, when working at the Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association, continued to contribute to strengthening and consolidating the relations between the two countries and the two peoples. He said that people from both sides should visit each other's countries more often to inspire future generations.
The Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association in Hungary also often visits universities to give lectures on the situation in Vietnam, organizes exhibitions about Vietnam, and maintains close relations with the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese Association in Budapest.
During the recent celebration of the Hungary-Vietnam diplomatic relations in Hungary, the Hungary-Vietnam Friendship Association introduced the book "Magyar katonák Dél-Vietnámban 1973-1975" ( Hungarian Soldiers in South Vietnam from 1973-1975 ) about the historical cooperation during the period from 1973-1975.
He also contributed a lot of material to the book since 1973 in the hope that Hungarian youth can better understand the history and relationship between the two countries.
In the coming time, the President of the Hungary - Vietnam Friendship Association will continue to have activities to strengthen the diplomatic relations between the two countries, especially in the fields of education and culture. During his time on duty in Vietnam until the following years, Mr. László is always willing to return to Vietnam at any time to meet and interact with wonderful people.
Youth of the two countries are the bridge
During his working trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Botz László met with leaders and representatives of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations. He donated books and hoped that the books would be translated into Vietnamese to introduce to young Vietnamese people a better understanding of the history of 50 years ago.
At the reception, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations Do Viet Ha expressed his emotion at the visit of Mr. Botz László. He said that the Hungarian Consulate General, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations and the Hungarian community in Vietnam have a very close relationship. The fact that many young Vietnamese people come to Hungary to study is a continuation of the increasingly strong relationship between the two sides.
