Former Malaysian football star dies of stroke on football field

The Malaysian football world recently received shocking news when former player Firos Mohamed passed away at the age of 53 due to a stroke right on the football field.

Former Malaysian football team goalkeeper Firos Mohamed recently passed away after suffering a stroke during a friendly match at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium, Perak state, on July 5.

The cause was determined to be acute myocardial infarction. He was 53 years old.

The incident occurred when Mr. Firos was participating in the Dr Zambry Abd Kadir Cup for former players. He was rushed to KPJ Sri Manjung Hospital but did not survive.

According to his wife, Fildaanis Mat, Firos has no history of cardiovascular disease and still lives and trains normally before the competition day.

His youngest son, Mohamad Fairiel Danish (18 years old), was in the stands and fainted from shock when he saw his father collapse.

The family said that just hours after the match, the whole family planned to take him to Bangi to enroll in college. However, the plan was canceled due to the unexpected accident.

The funeral was held the following afternoon at Surau Kampung Melayu, Air Itam. Mr Firos' body was buried at Masjid Ridwaniah Cemetery, attended by more than 100 people including family, former teammates and fans.

Medical experts say Mr. Firos's case is clear evidence that the risk of acute myocardial infarction can occur at any time, even in people without obvious underlying diseases.

Cardiologists recommend that middle-aged people who still participate in sports should have regular health check-ups, including electrocardiograms and echocardiograms.

Firos Mohamed played for the Malaysian national team in the early 1990s. For Penang FC, he was the main goalkeeper for many years and was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Northern region of Malaysia at that time.

He was also selected to train in Spain in Barcelona with five other players when he was still playing in the youth team.

After retiring in the late 1990s, Mr. Firos continued to pursue a coaching career, particularly as a goalkeeping coach at the Penang FC Football Academy.

He regularly participated in grassroots sporting events for former players and remained active in competition until the end of his life.

His former club Penang FC and many of his former teammates have sent their deepest condolences to Mr Firos’ family. The club said they will commemorate him in upcoming team activities, as a way to appreciate the decades of contributions of a goalkeeper who was respected by many generations of players.
