Young man with chickenpox is being treated at Bach Mai Hospital
The 30-year-old male patient had a history of nephrotic syndrome for 7 years and was taking immunosuppressive drugs, a factor that makes the body susceptible to pathogens. This young man had not been vaccinated against chickenpox and did not take any preventive measures when exposed to infected people.
After contracting the disease, the patient quickly fell into critical condition. At Bach Mai Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with fulminant liver failure, multiple organ failure, and severe blood clotting disorder. Despite treatment with antiviral drugs and modern blood filtration techniques, the patient's condition did not improve.
According to doctors at Bach Mai Hospital, chickenpox is an acute infectious disease caused by the Varicella-zoster virus. The disease spreads rapidly through the respiratory tract or direct contact with fluid from the blisters of an infected person. The disease can occur in both children and adults.
In most cases, the disease will go away on its own after 7 - 10 days, but for adults, pregnant women, newborns or people with weakened immune systems, chickenpox can become a serious life-threatening threat.
Chickenpox can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, meningitis, encephalitis, skin and soft tissue infections, or sepsis.
Children who take aspirin while sick are also at risk of Reye's syndrome - an extremely rare complication that can lead to liver and brain damage.
In pregnant women, chickenpox infection during pregnancy can cause birth defects or congenital varicella syndrome.
Serious complications of the disease can be completely prevented by a simple measure: getting vaccinated against chickenpox. The vaccine helps the body create antibodies against the virus, preventing infection and reducing the risk of serious complications if you are unfortunately infected.
