Former South Korean President's wife officially has her master's degree revoked for plagiarism

Sookmyung Women's University has officially revoked the master's degree of Ms. Kim Keon Hee - wife of the former President of South Korea - on the grounds of plagiarism.

The announcement made on June 24 said that the graduate council of Sookmyung Women's University met on June 23 and decided to cancel Ms. Kim's degree, based on the conclusion of the university's Research Ethics Committee, according to The Korea Times.

Ms. Kim received her master's degree in 1999 with a thesis titled "A Study on the Characteristics of Paul Klee's Paintings."

The school opened an investigation into the plagiarism allegations against Ms. Kim in mid-December 2022. After a period of review, a committee of the school's Graduate School decided to revoke her master's degree in order to "establish research ethics and enhance academic reputation."

According to Korea Joongang Daily, on the afternoon of June 24, Kookmin University, where Ms. Kim received her doctorate, also said it was conducting the necessary administrative procedures to re-evaluate the validity of her studying and receiving her doctorate at the school.

Ms. Kim Keon Hee received her PhD in Technology Design from the Graduate School of Kookmin University in 2008.

“Based on the fact that Ms. Kim Keon Hee's master's degree has been revoked, we are reviewing the validity of her studies and doctoral degree at the school,” said a representative of Kookmin University.

According to the Korean Higher Education Act, a student must have a valid master's degree to be eligible to apply for a doctoral program. Therefore, the revocation of Ms. Kim's master's degree from Sookmyung University is a legal basis for considering revoking her doctoral degree from Kookmin University.

The school said it will collect necessary documents, including a document confirming the revocation of her master's degree from Sookmyung University and consent from Ms. Kim to access other official records.
