Vietnamese action movie returns

After a period of silence, Vietnamese action movies are showing signs of "heating up" again with two new projects: Sky Death Battle (expected to be released on September 2) and Heroic Bloodline 2: White Swallow of Ca Mau (in progress).

Both films have a distinct spirit of innovation: one exploits the content of aviation security rarely seen in Vietnamese cinema; the other focuses on the theme of martial arts and family heritage, expanding an influential brand.

Air Deathmatch attracts attention right from the "witness battle in the sky" setting: a hijacking in the late 1970s is recreated with a tense rhythm in the aircraft cabin - a space that requires extremely precise set design, staging and editing. The trailer released by the producer shows the dramatic plot revolving around the 1978 flight with the participation of the main cast including Thai Hoa, Kaity Nguyen and Thanh Son. The participation of People's Police Cinema in the production promises to help the film access a unique source of material - a material that helps increase the value of this genre.

The project Bloodline Hero 2: White Swallow of Ca Mau expands with the story of "White Swallow of Ca Mau" Nguyen Chanh Minh - the grandfather of Charlie Nguyen and Johnny Tri Nguyen. The project was initiated by the Bloodline Hero crew, Johnny Tri Nguyen is expected to play the role of "White Swallow of Ca Mau", emphasizing the "martial arts - patriotism" theme associated with the Southern land in the early 20th century. It is known that the process of finding a screenwriter and developing the script was supervised by director Charlie Nguyen.

Looking back, Vietnamese cinema has had impressive action films such as Hai Phuong (2019), which not only set a record for domestic revenue when it reached 200 billion VND, but also achieved global revenue of 8.6 million USD - a rare phenomenon for action films produced in Vietnam at the time of release. This success shows that if a solid script and a well-trained cast are combined to create a standard action film, the domestic market is ready to welcome it.

Before that, Heroic Blood (2007) and Dragon Trap (2009) also made their mark on modern Vietnamese action films. Despite limited resources, these films contributed to forming the habit of enjoying Vietnamese action films among audiences, while also training a generation of actors and directors who understand the genre.

However, in order for the comeback to not stop at "timing effect", Vietnamese cinema needs to build a sustainable action film ecosystem; the important factors are still the script and editing rhythm, the special effects prioritize tactics - action serves the story content. The 2 upcoming projects are worth looking forward to because each film opens up a unique identity. If done well, these 2 films can rekindle the demand for watching Vietnamese action films on a larger scale, thereby hoping for the possibility of an explosion of "made in Vietnam" action films in the near future.
