( CTO ) - Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital has just successfully treated a 36-week-old newborn with fetal distress using invasive mechanical ventilation.
The patient is the child of the mother TT H (in Vinh Long province) born at 36 weeks gestation, weighing 3kg at Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital. After birth, the patient's whole body was cyanotic, not breathing, and had no heart. Doctors from the Pediatrics Department coordinated with the Obstetrics Department to resuscitate the patient right in the operating room. Through clinical examination and testing and specialist consultation, the doctors diagnosed: the patient had respiratory and circulatory failure, neonatal sepsis, and a high risk of death.
After consultation, pediatricians developed a treatment plan with active measures in the neonatal intensive care unit. The baby was prescribed invasive mechanical ventilation, infection control and special care. The baby was fed completely intravenously and then pumped milk through a gastric tube. Through active treatment and close monitoring of the patient's condition, the doctors successfully controlled and treated the patient. After a week, the patient was breathing on his own, had a good sucking reflex and was able to digest breast milk well. Currently, the newborn's health is stable and he has been discharged from the hospital.
Dr. Huynh Thi Ngoc Ngoan, Deputy Head of Pediatrics Department, Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital, said: Fetal distress is a condition in which the fetus is not healthy, occurring when the newborn does not receive enough oxygen through the placenta. This can make it difficult for the baby to breathe after birth, and may even stop breathing. Fetal distress can occur during pregnancy or during labor. This newborn baby had fetal distress leading to respiratory failure during labor and was prescribed invasive mechanical ventilation. Newborns prescribed mechanical ventilation are usually for severe cases, especially progressive acute respiratory failure, if the ventilator is left on, there is a risk of death. In addition, the patient also needs many infusion pumps, electric syringes, gastric tubes, etc. to support. Caring for newborns on mechanical ventilation is very difficult, requiring a team of solid professionals to perform.
Doctors recommend: Pregnant women need to have prenatal checkups according to the instructions of obstetricians, take good care of the pregnancy, and limit the occurrence of fetal distress. If the doctor predicts fetal distress, pregnant women should go to specialized neonatal medical facilities for the best treatment.
