Just days after being released by Lyon, former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly in talks with an Italian club over a possible transfer.

The 37-year-old was released by Lyon just before the start of the Ligue 1 season, after just 18 months with the club. Matic is now a free agent and according to Sky Sports (Italy), he is in talks with Sassuolo - the team that was promoted to Serie A - about a new contract.

It is understood that Matic's representatives had positive talks with Sassuolo coach Fabio Grosso and CEO Giovanni Carnevali this week.

If the deal goes through, Matic will return to Serie A just a few years after leaving Roma, where he spent a season under Jose Mourinho, making 50 appearances. Matic joined Lyon from Rennes in January last year and has made 55 appearances for the French club. It is not yet clear why Lyon have decided to part ways with him.

Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 in June due to financial problems, with debts of £422m announced in October last year. However, the club successfully appealed and will continue playing in Ligue 1, their 37th consecutive season in the top flight.

During his career at Old Trafford, the Serbian midfielder had 5 seasons, playing 189 matches for MU, although he could not repeat the glories he won with Chelsea: 2 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup and 1 League Cup.

Matic was previously a key player in the Chelsea squad that won the Premier League under Jose Mourinho in 2014/15, and then repeated the feat under Antonio Conte in 2016-17.
