- Where's your car? Why are you walking home like this?
"I lent it to a friend," Hung stammered in reply.
As soon as Hung finished speaking, the strong smell of alcohol filled the air. Sensing something was wrong, Mai pressed him for more information:
- Tell me the truth. Or did you get drunk, get a breathalyzer test, and then get detained?
Knowing he couldn't hide it from his wife, Hung finally confessed:
- Today I went out for a New Year's celebration with some colleagues from the company. It's the beginning of the new year, so I drank a bit too much. On the way home, the police asked me to take a breathalyzer test. I knew I'd get a heavy fine, so I refused and left my car there.
"Oh my God, it's only the beginning of the year and you're already like this. I've reminded you so many times, but you never listen. 'If you drink, don't drive.' So many people have suffered the consequences because they couldn't refuse alcohol. At best, it's economic damage; at worst, it can cost them their lives. And yet you still haven't learned your lesson. Now you've added the offense of refusing to comply with a breathalyzer test. I don't even dare think about the fines for all those offenses combined..."
- I was so flustered at the time that I couldn't think straight. I was just afraid of getting fined if I stopped for a breathalyzer test, plus the added offenses of not wearing a helmet and not having the necessary documents... All those offenses would cost a lot of money, so I thought it would be better to just leave first.
"If you were so afraid, why didn't you refuse alcohol from the start?" Mai snapped.
Seeing that Hung didn't answer, she continued:
- I think it's lucky you got your blood alcohol level checked by the police. If you were drunk and driving your motorbike on the road, and you accidentally caused an accident, it would be terrible for your family and other people on the road...
- Well, it's my fault. I disregarded my health and lacked the courage to refuse, which led to this situation. I'm scared now; I'll never dare think about driving after drinking again.
Seeing that Hung had realized his mistake, Mai chose her words carefully:
- Well, what's done is done. Tomorrow I'll take half a day off work, go see the police, and see how they handle it, then I'll comply...
