Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang meets with Vietnamese peacekeeping officers at the United Nations

On May 29, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the United States, activities took place to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

A moment of silence and gratitude for the more than 4,400 United Nations soldiers and peacekeepers who died while on duty at the United Nations.

Speaking at the medal and award ceremony for outstanding individuals in peacekeeping operations, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the significance and important contributions of the "blue beret" force carrying out the noble mission at the United Nations headquarters and 11 Missions in many hot spots around the world .

The UN chief and delegates observed a minute of silence to pay tribute to the more than 4,400 UN soldiers and peacekeepers who have died in the line of duty over the past eight decades, including 57 who died in 2024.

Also on this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations, held a meeting with Vietnamese peacekeeping officers and officials working at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Speaking at the meeting, the Ambassador emphasized that participating in UN peacekeeping activities is one of the important policies and decisions of our Party and State in the process of international integration, reflecting Vietnam's new position and strength in the international arena. After 11 years of deployment, the peacekeeping forces of the army and police have contributed significantly to enhancing the image and prestige of the country and the Vietnam People's Armed Forces.

On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang warmly congratulated Army Lieutenant Colonel Truong Anh Tuan as one of 33 officers working at the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations headquarters to be honored to receive the United Nations' noble Peacekeeping Medal in 2025.

The Ambassador sent greetings to all Vietnamese peacekeeping officers and staff before ending his term in New York. During more than 3 years as Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the United Nations, the Ambassador has always paid special attention and made efforts to promote and expand Vietnam's participation and contribution to UN peacekeeping activities.

* On May 29, 1948, the United Nations officially launched the United Nations Peace Supervision Organization (UNTSO) to maintain the implementation of the armistice agreement between Israel and neighboring Arab countries. Since then, May 29 has become United Nations Peacekeeping Forces Day. Over the past 77 years, more than 2 million peacekeepers and peacekeepers from 125 sending countries have served in 71 UN peacekeeping missions, of which more than 4,400 have died while on duty.

** By 2025, Vietnam will have sent more than 1,100 blue beret soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army and People's Public Security to participate in United Nations peacekeeping missions in the South Sudan, Central African Republic, Abyei region and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the United Nations Headquarters.
