The 2025 Potomac Dialogue, themed “Bridging the Gap: The Crucial Role of the Asia -Pacific Region in Global Economic Security and Stability,” aims to promote open, inclusive, and substantive dialogue among stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region, enhance understanding, cooperation, and shared responsibility, and foster collaboration to effectively address the region’s challenges and opportunities.
This year's forum was attended by over 100 delegates, including Ambassadors/Embassy representatives of APEC member countries in the US, scholars from US, European and Asian policy research organizations, former government officials, and businesses from the US and Asia- Pacific countries.
In his keynote address at the opening session, Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed that the Asia-Pacific region is facing profound global political and economic upheavals, with intertwined challenges such as strategic competition, protectionism, supply chain disruptions, climate change, and non-traditional security instability. However, it is also a dynamic region, accounting for over 60% of global GDP and playing a pivotal role in growth, innovation, and international economic integration.
The Ambassador emphasized that to overcome the current "headwinds," economies need to strengthen dialogue, cooperation, and respect for international law, while also taking the lead in digital transformation, innovation, green development, and inclusiveness. The Ambassador also acknowledged the crucial role of APEC and ASEAN in promoting multilateral cooperation, maintaining peace, stability, and sustainable development.
The Ambassador stated that in 2027, Vietnam will assume the APEC chairmanship for the third time with the theme "Connecting, Building Inclusive and Resilient Economies" on Phu Quoc Island, An Giang province. By hosting APEC 2027, Vietnam is committed to working closely with the United States and other member states to jointly address common issues, promote dialogue, and strengthen multilateral cooperation, towards a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world for all.
Following the opening session, the forum continued with four lively discussion sessions featuring speakers on the challenges, opportunities, and solutions for the Asia-Pacific region.
