From Thai girl to border cultural symbol

Vi Hoa was born and raised in Moc Chau. As a Thai girl, she has a love for the mountains and forests of the Northwest. "I was born in a mountainous land, feeling the space of the mountains and forests, the sound of the streams blending into me. When I sing, it's like I'm speaking for my homeland," People's Artist Vi Hoa shared in her Confession.

After graduating from the University of Culture, with the opportunity created by People's Artist Quy Duong, Vi Hoa then studied at the Military University of Culture and Arts. The song Tay Bac Love Song by musician Bui Duc Hanh was the turning point that brought Vi Hoa to audiences nationwide. "Many artists sing this song very well, but I was born in the mountainous land so I can feel the breath of each childhood," she explained.

Vi Hoa's journey of more than 30 years is associated with proud achievements: Gold Medals at National Arts Festivals (1994, 1995, 1996, 2000), the first ASEAN Golden Voice in Vietnam (1996), being awarded the titles of Meritorious Artist (2001) and People's Artist (2015).

The Call of Destiny

Throughout her career, Vi Hoa has faced a crossroads many times: staying with the border guards or moving to larger art troupes with more opportunities to travel abroad and better conditions. The story of the phone call from a young soldier at the Lai Chau border post became an unforgettable memory for her.

"More than 20 years ago, a soldier at Lai Chau border post called me. He asked: Are you artist Vi Hoa ? I heard you are no longer in the Border Guard force? Please stay so we can have you, we can be proud . That statement made me feel shaken. I simply thought that I must have value to the younger generation. A soldier who only did military service for 2 years still knew me. That motivated me to understand that I bring value to many soldiers," she shared.

From then on, Vi Hoa was steadfast in her choice. Tours to remote border posts became an endless source of motivation. "We lack grand stages, sparkling lights, and enthusiastic audiences in urban areas, but we have dirt stages, stilt houses, and maybe just the yards of border posts, but they are filled with the warmth, love, and eagerness of our comrades and people," she confided.

Family woman and green uniform

Vi Hoa faces many challenges when balancing her career and family. Having given birth to twins, a boy and a girl, at the age of 40, she often has to be away from her children to perform for soldiers. Every year, she has more than 100 performances, and close to Tet, she goes to serve at the border.

"I remember most the evenings, when the unit finished serving and was preparing for Tet, but it looked so desolate. In the city, preparations were bustling, but the soldiers were still focused. When preparing meals like that, I felt sad. Women always feel sad, why can't they be with their children at this time," Vi Hoa confided.

There was a time when my daughter asked me: "Why don't you become a teacher? A teacher only requires 8 hours of teaching and then coming home, so you have a lot of time for me. But you perform more than a hundred shows every year, and before Tet you have to work at the border." Her innocent questions made me feel uneasy.

Vi Hoa once faced the challenge of balancing career and family.

"To keep the fire burning in the family, sometimes we have to put aside our passions. When we understand each other, have the same views, and share, we will reach the destination. Parents are always proud to have a child with a military rank, always encouraging their children to try their best," she shared. But family is also the biggest source of motivation. Although she retired in 2021, Vi Hoa still teaches at home and plans to perform live shows.
