Ensuring over 7,000 irrigation works serving agricultural production

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Tuyen Quang, the whole province currently has 7,203 irrigation works, serving production on 79,700 hectares of agricultural land in the province. Of which, there are 500 reservoirs; 4,588 dams; 85 pumping stations; the rest are water wheels and self-flowing springs. The irrigation canal system has a total length of 8,085 km, of which 5,575 km are solid canals and 2,375 km are earthen canals, helping to ensure irrigation for more than 85% of the rice area planted according to the annual plan.

During the recent floods caused by storms Bualoi and Matmo, the whole province had 51 irrigation works and 15,227m of canals damaged. It is estimated that over 100 billion VND is needed to repair and maintain irrigation works that were built a long time ago, degraded and damaged by floods. On that basis, Tuyen Quang province will develop a maintenance and repair plan, giving priority to irrigation works serving large cultivated areas, areas frequently affected by flooding and drought. Along with that, a database system for dams and reservoirs will be built; maps and flood warning signs will be built and operational capacity for grassroots irrigation works management boards will be improved.
