Ly Son Island has an area of about 10 square kilometers, 15 nautical miles from the mainland (about 24 kilometers by water), with a population of about 21,000 people. This is an outpost island district associated with the Hoang Sa army, obeying the king's orders to sail out to sea to plant sovereignty markers on the two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa in the past.
Ly Son Island is formed mainly by volcanic rocks (sedimentary - eruptive and basalt) and has outstanding geomorphological and geological value. On the island to this day, there are still many traces of volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The largest existing sediments are the steep cliffs standing right in the middle of the ocean.
