Gaza's population has fallen by 6 percent since the start of the conflict with Israel nearly 15 months ago, with about 100,000 Palestinians leaving the enclave and some 45,000 killed, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS).

PCBS cited figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health as saying that about 45,500 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, have been killed since the conflict broke out in Gaza, and 11,000 people are still missing.
As a result, Gaza's population has fallen by about 160,000 people during the conflict, to 2.1 million. Of these, more than one million are children under the age of 18, accounting for 47% of the total population.
PCBS stressed that Israel has “launched a brutal attack on Gaza, targeting every aspect of life there: people, buildings, essential infrastructure… Whole families have been completely wiped out. The humanitarian and material losses are immeasurable”.
However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the PCBS figures, saying the data was "inflated".
Israel also faces charges of genocide in Gaza due to the scale of the loss of life and property. In January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must prevent acts of genocide against Palestinians.
Tel Aviv has repeatedly denied the accusations, insisting it complies with international law and has the right to self-defense after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 Israelis and led to the current conflict.
According to PCBS, about 22% of Gaza's population is currently facing severe food insecurity, with about 3,500 children at risk of death due to malnutrition and food shortages.
