Vietnam hands over rotating ASEAN chairmanship in Brasilia to Cambodia

The Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil has chaired and organized many practical activities to promote cooperation between ASEAN and Brazil.

Ambassador Bui Van Nghi chaired the ASEAN Committee meeting in Brasilia.

On June 17, at the Embassy headquarters, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi chaired the meeting of the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia ( ACB ), officially ending Vietnam's rotating chairmanship term and transferring the role to the Cambodian Embassy.

At the meeting, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi reviewed outstanding activities during his term, emphasizing the spirit of cooperation, unity and responsibility of members in effectively implementing common programs.

During its tenure as ACB President, the Vietnamese Embassy has chaired and organized many practical activities, receiving high appreciation from ASEAN member countries in promoting cooperation between ASEAN and Brazil in general and Brazil with each member country in particular.

The Vietnamese Embassy solemnly held farewell ceremonies for the Malaysian Ambassador (January 2025) and the Thai Ambassador, and welcomed two new Ambassadors to Brazil, contributing to maintaining solidarity and unity within the ASEAN bloc.

In addition, the Embassy organized a working trip of ACB to the city of Belém (May 2025) to explore opportunities and potential cooperation with the state of Pará and the city, and to prepare for the participation of ASEAN leaders at the COP 30 Summit in November.

In particular, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi, on behalf of ACB, had a working session with the Permanent Vice President of the Brazilian Senate, speaking at the Launching Ceremony of the Brazil-ASEAN Parliamentary Front (March 2025), an important step to institutionalize and further deepen parliamentary relations between Brazil and ASEAN countries.

On this occasion, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi announced that Timor-Leste will become an official member of ASEAN at the ASEAN Summit in October 2025 and Ambassador of Timor-Leste Maria Viegas Carrascalão attended the ACB meeting.

At the same time, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi also expressed his sincere thanks for the support and assistance of ASEAN Ambassadors so that Vietnam could successfully complete its term as rotating Chairman of ACB.

Cambodian Ambassador Nguon Hong Prak, as the next Chair, expressed his deep gratitude to Vietnam for its effective leadership during his term, and proposed a number of directions for future activities such as: Organizing a Joint Operation Fund, ASEAN Family Day, visits to Brazilian states and increasing contact with the local community.

Ambassador Nguon Hong Prak emphasized the need to develop a flexible schedule, in line with the common priorities of member countries, in order to continue to maintain the success of Vietnam's term.
