After losing a dramatic first set, Gauff staged a stunning comeback to seal the women's singles final at Roland Garros on the evening of June 7 after 2 hours and 38 minutes and lift the Suzanne Lenglen trophy.

"Overall I'm really happy with the match I played today. It wasn't a pretty win, but the job was done, and that's all that matters," Gauff said in a press conference.

Three years after finishing runner-up at Roland Garros 2022, Gauff added the Roland Garros title to her collection, alongside the 2023 US Open title. Notably, she also beat Sabalenka from a set down to win the title in New York.

The head-to-head record between the two players was fairly even before the final on the evening of June 7. However, with this victory, Gauff now leads Sabalenka 6-5 overall, including 2-1 on clay and 2-1 at Grand Slam tournaments.

The victory marked several milestones for Gauff. She is the first American in a decade to win in Paris, since Serena Williams won her third title in 2015. At 21, Gauff is also the youngest American to win a Roland Garros title since Serena Williams' first French Open in 2002.

"This is a title that I really wanted, because I think this is one of the tournaments that when I was young I felt I had the best chance of winning," Gauff said.

Gauff leaves Roland Garros as the clay-court match-winner this year, with 18 main-draw wins at WTA events (one more than Sabalenka). Prior to Roland Garros, she had reached two consecutive WTA 1000 finals in Madrid and Rome, but lost to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini. She did, however, win her first Grand Slam title this year.

Sabalenka, for her part, nearly became the only active woman to win singles titles at three of the four Grand Slam events, but was stopped by Gauff, who had seven fewer winners than Sabalenka but made 40 fewer unforced errors, a key factor in the victory.

With 2,000 points from her second Grand Slam title, Gauff will move up from No. 5 to No. 2 in the race to the Riyadh WTA Finals. The American will also maintain her career-high No. 2 ranking in the world . Gauff also pocketed €2,550,000 for her title effort.

Sabalenka drops to 3-3 in Grand Slam finals, but she will still hold the No. 1 spot in both the WTA rankings and the race to the Riyadh WTA Finals by a wide margin. For reaching the final, Sabalenka will receive €1,275,000.

The 2025 Roland Garros final marks the first time a women's Grand Slam final has been contested between the world No. 1 and No. 2 since the 2018 Australian Open (No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki defeated No. 1 Simona Halep), and the first Roland Garros final between the top two players since 2013 (No. 1 Serena Williams defeated No. 2 Maria Sharapova).

On a windy day, the first set was a tense affair, befitting the position of both players. Sabalenka initially led 4-1, and she served for the set at 5-4 (holding two set points) and 6-5. However, Sabalenka could not completely overcome Gauff's relentless pace, and the American fought back to take the first set into a tie-break. A Gauff forehand gave her a 4-1 lead in the tie-break, setting the stage for a dramatic comeback. Sabalenka, however, pressed deeper into the court to get it back to 5-5, and with two decisive volleys, she took the first set in 1 hour and 17 minutes.

After that rough start, however, it was Gauff who came out swinging in the second set, hitting more shots inside the box. She broke immediately and, after a brilliant return, the American led 4-1. As Sabalenka made more errors, Gauff cruised through the rest of the second set, and the match was suddenly even.

The pair traded breaks early in the third set, but Gauff took control at 4-3 after finishing a strong serve with a cross-court backhand winner. At 5-4, Sabalenka saved a match point with a decisive return that found the corner, and the top seed was able to claim a break point with a final push. Gauff was unstoppable, though, and after a final full-court rally, the American stood firm and fell to the ground in victory.

"I tried to attack more in the second set, and it worked. Then in the third set, I knew she was going to raise her level. I was like, I have to try to catch up. And, yeah, just keep running," Gauff said.
