Monkey Island was formerly known as Pineapple Island. This was because the island had many wild pineapple plants, many of them tall with large, delicious-looking but inedible fruits. The locals used these fruits by drying them to make medicine. Later, when the forest rangers brought 20 monkeys to the island to raise them in the wild, the island became affectionately known as Monkey Island. Visitors can play with the monkeys, feed them, and watch them perform tricks.
Cat Ba Monkey Island, with its pristine and majestic beauty, attracts millions of visitors every year. Although it has not yet been extensively developed for tourism and services, it remains a favorite destination for many tourists visiting Hai Phong. The ideal time to visit Monkey Island is during the summer months, from April to October, when the weather is cool and pleasant, perfect for relaxation and swimming.
This island is located about 2km from Cat Ba town and about 60km from the center of Hai Phong city. To get to the island, tourists usually choose a boat to Monkey Island departing from Beo pier, with a travel time of about 10 minutes. This journey will pass by Cai Beo fishing village and several small islands in the Cat Ba archipelago.

The island is known for its stunning, unspoiled scenery, featuring mountainous terrain and long stretches of sandy beaches. It boasts two crescent-shaped beaches: Cat Dua Beach 1 and Cat Dua Beach 2. Of these, Cat Dua Beach 1 is longer and is an ideal swimming spot for tourists visiting Cat Ba.
According to the experience of those who have visited Cat Ba Monkey Island, stopping at Cat Dua 1 beach, tourists can freely immerse themselves in the clear, cool sea water. Although the services here are still quite simple, they generally meet basic recreational needs such as: renting floats, swimsuits, kayaks, and serving drinks at thatched huts… The peaceful atmosphere here will provide tourists with truly relaxing and ideal moments.
Cat Dua 2 Beach is located on the right, hidden behind a tiger-shaped promontory. It boasts a spacious garden spanning hundreds of square meters, planted with trees such as sea almond, white apple, and wild pineapple, creating a cool, green space filled with the cheerful chirping of birds. At Cat Dua 2 Beach, visitors can immerse themselves in the picturesque and peaceful natural surroundings. Those who enjoy exploration can climb halfway up the mountain to admire the panoramic view of Lan Ha Bay (part of the Cat Ba archipelago), with its hundreds of large and small islands rising from the clear water, dotted with fine white sand beaches in the distance. This is also a stunning spot to watch the sunrise or sunset on Monkey Island.
Snorkeling to admire coral reefs is also a very interesting activity that not every beach can offer. Snorkeling here is offered as part of a tour. Tourists participating in this activity will get to admire the diverse underwater ecosystem, including coral reefs and schools of fish swimming around in a variety of vibrant colors.
With its pristine natural beauty, Monkey Island is increasingly becoming a must-visit destination whenever people come to Cat Ba. The moments spent immersing oneself in the clear, peaceful waters or watching the romantic sunset on the beach here are enough to entice visitors and make them want to return to enjoy it again.
